It has happened my friend. They are officially out of ideas....or just the balls to try something that isn't already a proven moneymaker.

Tomb Raider ripped off Indiana Jones, Uncharted ripped off Tomb Raider. But there will be a twist because Tomb Raider is just about to rip off Uncharted, to the detriment of the series. :(

Maybe it's because I felt the first game was boring as balls and decided that a large breasted woman wasn't enough to keep me coming back, but I feel that the new Tomb Raider game looks freaking good. It actually makes me want to play it.

Honestly, the new Tomb Raider (which badly needs a subtitle or websites'll get it confused with the very first one) reminds me of Assassin's Creed III. The whole open-world, hunting animals, climbing and jumping... I can't help but see a lot of similarities between the two. Good? Bad? I dunno. Just saying what I'm seeing.

I purposely made her wear coats and heavy clothing all through Underworld, just because it was my fuck you to execs that think we really care.

Funnily enough, I always made her wear full sets of clothes as well (although not quite heavy coats and the like) because it just made logical sense. Why the fuck would you go adventuring in hot pants? Wouldn't they chafe after, like, 5 minutes? Appreciate Crystal Dynamics giving me the option to do so though, that was nice of them.

The first Tomb Raider game - which I played when it came out in 1997 on my PSX - was a completely unique gaming experience back then and essentially set the tone for a lot of exploratory action adventure type games afterwards. It was about my favorite PSX game after Final Fantasy VII. Toby Gard has a strong sense of level design, and one particular TR design/motivation feature which was borrowed by other game makers afterwards was to have a central "HQ" point in a level to which you return repeatedly after exploring the adjacent areas. Maximum open world experience - minimum travel path length.

Still I am personally of the opinion that the original TR hasn't aged well - I strongly favor the 2007 remake, sad to say.

None of the Core Design ones have, to be honest. The core (heh, I made a pun) gameplay is just too slow paced, the levels too blocky (though that was kind of the point, I guess) and the visuals too murky to really appeal to a more modern audience.

Case in point, I tried to play through Tomb Raider 2 a while back, and I got as far as the Arctic level before giving up, but even before then the slightly awkward level design and the boringly slow pace just made it more a chore than anything else. Having played the more recent games the massive difference in feel was obvious.
  • edited August 2012
But wasn't Crash Bandicoot blocky in the first one?
  • edited August 2012
Not so much. Also, the core gameplay was much faster paced, so it didn't matter quite so much.

[/Tactfully avoid bringing up dislike for Crash Bandicoot]

I have played 2 Tomb raider games. I got Tomb Raider Angel Of Darkness & Tomb Raider Legend. I also got Lara Croft & The Guardian Of Light with Playstation Plus...I should give it a try. I might get the first 5 PS1 games on the PSN now that they our down to 2 pound each for the Summer Sale. Also Crash 3 is one of the greatest PS1 Games ever.

I got Tomb Raider Angel Of Darkness

In Germany the game was called Katastrophe.:p

I see what you did there...Because it's bad right?

    It's horrible.
The low point of the series.
  • edited August 2012
What are the main bad points?
  • edited August 2012
    All of it.
The controls (try the stairs), the gameplay (build up strength mechanism sux), horrible level design.
And the "Title song" (which I actually like)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0-i4zNCesk

Really there is plenty wrong with the game. Get a review from the time it was released.

(the song might actually be my favourite thing about the game)
  • edited August 2012
So a song from it you liked is a low point to the game?

    NOT chronicles.
    Last Revelation.

Yes. That one too. (esp. the PS1 version with more music).

Well it was the start into the series for both of us I guess. I really like it but I don't think I can recommend it to everyone.
It certainly reinvented the wheel but It has been copied and improved upon so much by now that a new player could easily not appreciate it because others did it better.
Just like the first Half-Life game. It has the same problem nowadays.

And, as has been said, it does not hold up well in a world with the modern Prince of Persia games.

If you're determined to play the first one though, I'd recommend Tomb Raider Revised, a fan project that remakes the whole of the original game in the Tomb Raider 4 engine. Sadly there's no remakes of TR2 or 3, but hey ho.

Broken Sword 3. It's different than 1 and 2 but I enjoyed it for the most part. I wouldn't call it a horrible game. I thought it was pretty good, maybe even re playable. Some of the puzzles were annoying, like the no detection puzzles. But , other than that I liked it.

I played through Day of the Tentacle again. 9/10. Yes, it drops the replayability of Maniac Mansion, but it's still a very entertaining game. And I think it works as a Maniac Mansion sequel even though it feels completely different (and, actually, that's what I like about it is it's fresh feeling. I'd love to see more radically different sequels like this). :)

But, after playing it this time I feel dumb. I just found out that you can give your objects to other characters through their pictures on the screen. Every time I played through it I always went to the chron-o-johns and flushed the objects manually.

I plan on playing the original PSX Tomb Raider at some point in the not-too-distant future. To me, those horrendous blocky graphics are part of the charm.

    Rage (PC).

Before the last mission & ending, I would have given this game a 7 out of 10 because despite of a few technical flaws (some down to the fact that my computer isn't as graphically powerful as I'd like and the rest down to the fact that it's a poor port) I enjoyed it. The missions are very linear and mission locations are often used twice, once for a story mission and again (sometimes in reverse) for a side mission. For the most part anyway, like not including the story mission that is just a reverse of an earlier story mission (that earlier story mission would turn out to be the best mission of the game, for pacing & atmosphere as well as the challenge - I'll just say Dead City).

And then the ending happens. I'm not going to spoil anything other than the fact that the ending happens, which it does. It just happens. My reaction to the ending is best summed up by the game title - RAGE. If the title is supposed to have some baring on the plot of the game then it must be a very subtle reference or just hidden so deep (not that there's anything deep about this game) that it may as well not exist.

Anyway, because of the way the game ended the score I'm giving this game is 4 out of 10. It's not the worse game I've played, 'cos I had some fun on the way but it is one of the worse endings I've witnessed. Well, at least since endings became more than a 'well done' screen. A modern, story driven game like this (ha!) needs closure at least, even if sequel hooks are used. Otherwise it just feels like I've wasted the time I've put into the game.

    Damn you id.

That is an excellent article. Supposing I ever have enough time to play a game ever again, I will definitely be getting Torchlight II.

Torchlight 2 pretty much tears Diablo 3 into little tiny pieces, then urinates on those pieces, then sticks them onto the barbie for that smokey finish.

(Its not exactly hard though. All Blizzard needed to make was a Diablo 2+. Instead What we got was a Diablo 2---, so its not exactly hard to beat! XD)

    To The Moon 10/10

I actually don't want to talk too much about this one. All I'd do is give too much of the story away. You need to go in as blind as possible to fully enjoy it. Well, maybe the basics: You play as 2 employees of a company that is fulfilling the final wishes of dying people by manipulating their memory of the past. And in this case the person wants to go to the moon. Why? That's one of the things you need to find out in this.

Gameplay is minimal. The thing is completely story-focussed. You explore the Patient's memory for enough clues to go on in your quest. The game hast some humorous moments but for the most time will make you cry. The reason for that is the excellent soundtrack, which you can and should get with the game. If you didn't, you'll get it after playing the game. Trust me. It's phenomenal.

    Play time: about 4 hours.

    Bad points:
    ° That
    horse riding
    memory
° 640x480 is the only available resolution.
° The Soundtrack has the original loops from the game. Some tracks do end in a really strange way.

Good points: Everything else. Trust me. Once you start you'll not stop for anything until it's done. Not even for updating the Steam thread.

    Borderlands - 7.5/10
This was the perfect game to play while listening to podcasts. Mindless follow the arrow and shoot everything that moves gameplay. Still it was done in a really good way. The game is of course grindy but the guns you get feel really rewarding. Getting that one shotgun you'll keep for 5-10 levels because it handles so well is a great feeling.
Quests and story aren't really the strong point of the game.
I don't think the characters are all that memorable. But the promise of the treasures that await me in "The Vault" EVERYONE wants to open intrigued me. On the way the gameplay feels fluent but I would like some changes to the travel interface. The rest of the menues are good as they were.

And then came the end of the game. FINALLY I got to see what is in "The Vault" and then came what makes the game lose 2 points in the rating: The "end".
You never get to enter the vault, you never see what might be in there even if there is anything in there besides what comes out of it. A giant tentacle beast you have to fight as the end boss. Yeah there are no treasures but now that you have a complete key why not sell it for cash?
Had I known that from the start why would I even try to open The Vault?

The bosses are kinda unbalanced. Some monsters that the game tells you you are ready for will own your digital a$$. Other bosses are way too easy? Why should I be afraid of a giant boss monster that cannot move towards me and has close range attacks when I have a great sniper rifle or a rocket launcher that can shoot it from a distance he can never touch me at?
The final boss was something similar. Completely static and you can circle it easily. Other bosses are a real challenge though. Humans with hard hitting guns and a ton of HP.
Still I had fun until I killed the final boss and got the end. Well I still have the 4 DLC packs to play.

And again: Thanks to gianttope for gifting me the game in the "TTG Secret Summer Santa" event.

Worst Characters to play as: Kunckles & Rouge

    Worst Levels: Pumpkin Hill,Final Rush,Final Chase,Enternal Engine,Mad Space, Security Hall,Mission Street.

Good:There is a lot of fun levels, most of the Sonic & Shadow stages are so fun and fast,Chao Garden is loads of fun,Loads of reasons to replay,Loads of levels,3 stories to go through,Loads of stuff to unlock, Fun multiplayer.

Bad: Knuckles & Rouge stages are long and boring,Final Chase/Rush is annoying because of how easy it is to die and the grinding is annoying,The Biolizard is one of the most annoying and unfair Sonic bosses,Kart Racing can get boring,You have to go through a couple of Tails/Eggman & Kunckles/Rouge stages before you get to the next Sonic/Shadow Stage.

    Rating 9/10

Technically, this would be Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock, which I finished last week. 3/10.

The core platforming is basic, boring and overused. There's very little variation from level to level besides the graphics, and the enemies all seem to behave exactly the same. The minigames are overused and not at all fun, the plot is insanely complicated, the stealth sections are badly done (and way too frequent) and the voice acting is... well actually, the voice acting is pretty good. But that's about it.

Even if you're a fan, avoid.
