    Bioshock Infinite

I have never spent so much of a game smiling with unadulterated glee. Every time I attached my skyhook hand onto a rail to whiz off into the sunset, I couldn't help but start grinning like a madwoman. Because this game is fun. I almost had forgotten what it was like to play a game for fun, where you don't have a checklist of things you have to do to get the "good" ending or all the collectables and plot points. I'd forgotten what it was like to not be restrained into automatically being stuck behind bits of rubble every time you move up to them, or not being able to jump around like a loon in the middle of combat.

That, combined with an amazingly twisty plot and an ending that I was only able to figure out two hours before it happened, make this probably my favorite game I've played this year.

The only part I didn't like was
the tower defense part at the end. I went through it twice, lost horribly both times and then caved and knocked down the difficulty a notch because I'm not made of time. However, I am moderately pleased that I got through the rest of the game alright.

    The Walking Dead - 8/10

It's sad. It's gross. Its theme doesn't fit with my usual taste.

But it's good. It's a very good game. I don't mind if TTG wants to make more games like this.

Man, I only watched a playthrough and the ending had me tearing up.:(

Still fun after all these years.

I still have it on my laptop (WinXP) and yep, I still love it. I played it for the first time when I was around six years old xD I even memorized some of my favourite levels (I know that sounds weird)

Nothing weird about that - I still remember the first couple of levels rather vividly.

Some people might call it a good game but for me it's like Farming Simulator for a farmer.

    Duke Nukem 3D Caribbean: Life's a Beach - 7/10

All fun until the last level which is a frustrating maze of switches and spawning enemies who fire rockets and can kill you before you realize they're there. Not fun when that happens. But yeah, it's a lot of fun.
  • Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne 9/10

Out of all three of the games, this is the only one I will give one less than 10 simply because it rehashed the gameplay from Max Payne and I thought that the character of Mona Sax made Max look even weaker than he already was. Besides that, awesome game.

    Bioshock Infinite - 8/10

I didn't really like the ending, it was cramped with a lot of details and explanations in the last couple of minutes, to make sure the audience wasn't lost in the story. Still a solid game though from start to finish, and I completed it all in one sitting.

Right up the same alley as the previous 2.
  • edited May 2013
I enjoyed the ending in the same way that I enjoyed the ending from Inception. It gives everyone something to talk about, regardless of how good it actually was.

It's been a long time since I discussed the ending of a game in an intellectual manner of trying to piece together all the clues. Because there are so many. And the gameplay basically marks the most enjoyable experience I've ever had playing a FPS and Bioshock Infinite has now taken the place of Republic Commando as my favorite FPS experience.
  • edited May 2013
The game was amazing, I was entertained throughout the whole thing. The ending was really good, I was both left shocked and sad. But it did leave me a bit dumbfounded as all the explanations came all at once in the very end all cramped in the last 10 minutes. I was just sitting there, "say what"? and didn't really understand what had just happened, so I had to go through some videos to have the details explained to me a bit better.

    I don't know, maybe I don't like to think that much. :p

Ohh, and it didn't help that my final cut scene bugged out on me so I didn't see it. :p
  • edited May 2013
Well, the ending makes more sense if you listened to all of the voxophone recordings. I did and I actually predicted it about an hour before I got to the ending. Not precisely all the details, but a good portion of them.

I bought the BeOS and OS/2 combo of Hopkins FBI that's up on eBay so I could help ScummVM with their release testing. Wow. What did I just play? It was just so bizarre.

I've never been stumped before on how to rate a game. I'll just let this review speak for me (although I didn't mind the puzzles, which is where my rating confusion comes in).

I have a new game to add to my favorites. It's far ahead of it's time, encouraging light-item management and using top-down Metal Gear style gameplay for survival horror. The enemies have only one real basic attack, but they're extremely varied, imaginative, and disturbing. You'll get tentacle pinapples, giant Hell-tentacle creatures, penis creatures, possessed people, normal animals and people who are transformed The Thing-style by the powers of Hell, etc. It has some cool story beats, and almost every NPC is important. The English translation is shitty as....hell.....and the controls can take some serious getting used to, but you have free range of eight directions to fight from, so that's great.

I should probably point out that my score might be higher than others may give. Dashing, Alcoremortis, and Guru watched me play through it, and they sure as shit didn't want to play it when I was done. But I loved it, and I'd play it again.

    Injustice: Gods Among Us

Now that the game is a few weeks old and I've been through the story mode, I think I can go ahead and say my thoughts on the game as a whole.

    Story 7/10
I won't get too overly spoiler-y here, but let's get the elephant in the room out of the way first. The story shot itself in the foot from the very beginning by making itself an "Elseworld" story. While in hindsight, having it be an alternate reality is the only way to pull off a sequel later while having done certain things in the story, it still weakened the overall story to me. While the transitions from cutscene to fight were well handled, there were other aspects that weren't always well handled, such as some of the minigame-like elements sprinkled into the story, mainly one involving Superman that...well, should've been handled differently. I will say this much about the story, I like how it ends up being Superman that's called on to save the day rather than Batman pulling some magical Kryptonite BS out of his utility belt at the last second. Ended up being less fan-wank that way. Pros: Good story, great voice acting that tells the story, great characters. Cons: Elseworld story keeps it from being more intriguing, minigames sometimes stop the flow or become really odd with the character, and shorter than expected.

    Graphics 8/10
I'll get this out of the way right now. This isn't the best looking game in the world, especially during story mode, and the blame for that can mostly be placed on the NPCs and the background. The very first cutscene ends up cutting to some Gotham cops that...frankly look very terrible. Not quite PS2 bad, but not nearly as good as they could have been. Sometimes the buildings in the cities don't look very impressive either in the story cutscenes. However, there are times when the graphics shine, and that's when we come to the actual character models and the stages for the fights. If the entire game had been given this much polish, then I would probably say it's one of the prettiest games I own. The actual playable characters are highly detailed, even to the point of having little hearts inscribed on the chambers of Harley Quinn's revolvers. Small details that you really won't see in gameplay. With only a few exceptions(Regime Killer Frost ughhh), I love the designs of the characters. The stages are also pretty well designed and the damage that occurs while the fights progress is neat. The stage interactions are also pretty cool. Pros: Great looking characters and stages and lighting. Cons: NPCs and buildings during cutscenes are rather mediocre.

    Music 8/10
Not going into too much detail on this one since it's just music. The cinematics and gameplay music is pretty good. The only gripe I have is with the song that plays during the end credits. It sucks. Plain and simple, it doesn't seem fitting. Pros: Excellent score for the fighting and cutscenes. Cons: Crappy song for the end credits.

    Gameplay 9/10
Gameplay is where Injustice: Gods Among Us shines. I truly expected it to be slow and clunky like Mortal Kombat since Injustice was also developed by NetherRealm Studios, but that's hardly the case. Battles are quick paced and brutal. Each character has a lot of different tools to bring to the table to make them all feel different from each other. This is especially noticeable in the cases of the huge brawny characters(Bane, Grundy, and Doomsday), the Lanterns, or Shazam and Black Adam not fighting alike. There's a definite emphasis on meter management and how you want to use it, whether to save it all up for a devastating super move or use it strategically to enhance attacks or use it to break a combo with the Clash system. My only gripes are that there isn't really an explanation in-game on how the Clashes work and there is sometimes some minor framerate drop from time to time. Pros: Quick, powerful fighting mechanics that flow very well, great controls. Cons: No real explanation on Clash mechanic, slight framerate drop.

    Overall 8/10
While I'd love to give this game a perfect 10/10, that's not the case. But most of my quibbles with it are very minor, and considering fighting game stories, Injustice's story being short is hardly the worst offense out there. Injustice may not be perfect, but by god it is fun and it's become my favorite fighting game. Most fighting games I have, I tend to pick a few characters and never stray from them(Chun-Li in SF, quick characters in SC), but in Injustice, I have found that I'm able to play with all of the characters and have fun with them. It's definitely worth picking up, especially if you're a fan of the characters in the DC Universe.

    Star Trek: The Game

I just finished this the other day. My opinion on it is quite mixed, but were I to compare it to another game, I would compare it more to the Ghostbusters game for PS3/360 than anything else.

    Graphics - 7/10
I hate to rate the graphics this low because they look really nice, and they really feel like the world of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek universe, but the plain and simple truth? The graphics feel dated. There's hardly any reflection in the corridors of the ship, there are blurry graphics at times, the mouth movements are mediocre at best, absolute trash at worst, and there are some framerate issues at times. It looks good, but hardly state of the art.

    Gameplay - 6/10
The gameplay is solid. That's about it. It borrows from Mass Effect, Arkham Asylum, and Uncharted. However, it doesn't really do any of these particularly well. The gunplay mechanic is fine. The tricorder mode is...decent, I guess. I compare it to Arkham Asylum's Detective Mode, but not nearly as nice. The stuff you can find doesn't highlight as well. The platforming stuff doesn't work that well at all. It's clumsy.

    Sound - 9/10
Now THIS is more like it. The game sounds like Star Trek. The weapons sound great. The effects for the ship sound great. The ambient sound is good. The character voice acting is great, aided by the fact that they have the actual actors from the movie providing the voices of their characters. The music is great and it's orchestrated, a rare thing for a licensed game.

    Stability - 6/10
I normally wouldn't rate a game on this, but GOD. This game had so many glitches happen! In one level, the game didn't update my nav point, so I got lost and had to restart from the checkpoint, at which point, I couldn't even switch weapons, meaning that any "infected" crewmembers would have to be subjected to lethal fire instead of stunning because I had my phaser rifle out. Then it did switch, but I couldn't fire. So I had to restart again. Then there was another moment later on where I was facing an infected red-shirt who WOULD NOT DIE. I couldn't stun, couldn't kill, couldn't do anything. All I could do was get to my mission objective and hope Spock wouldn't get his pointy-eared ass killed.

    Overall 7/10
All in all, the game is decent. It represents a good Trek adventure. If the game were more polished, it could be great instead of just decent.

Why did you like Dead Space 3 so much, NoName? I really didn't, so I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on it.
  • I love John Carpenter’s The Thing mythos. This game reminded so much about it (shape-shifting alien, frozen setting, intense paranoia), which is why I really enjoyed that game.

Also, I’ve been thinking of taking a video game script I wrote to a game developer, who at the time shall remain nameless, for a Nightmare on Elm Street point-and-click game. I’ve also written a script for a Halloween game (what would happen if Laurie Strode didn’t disappear), a Lost Boys game where you play as Edgar Frog (what would happen if Michael succumbed to his vampirism?), and an L.A. Confidential game (taking place while all the stuff in the movie is going on, only a completely different set of characters and an original story).

Actually, in my story, Freddy isn’t really the main villain. The main villains are a group of occultists who plan to make Freddy a very powerful demon and bring him into the mortal world. However, they need a sacrifice to do so. Their target: Susan Thompson, Nancy Thompson’s daughter. Susan is unaware of the truth behind her mother’s death and her father’s recent suicide. That is before Freddy begins to haunt her in her dreams (a good 80% of the game takes place in the Dream World) and the “Dream Demons,” which is the cult, chooses her as their target. As she fights to stay alive in both the real and dream worlds, she discovers that her only hope lies in a young man named Jacob Johnson (The Dream Child).

    The Starship Damrey

    6.5/10

Its a good little game. Nice atmosphere, a couple of oddly funny moments, some good puzzles. Not too hard, but not stupidly easy.
And the eventual plot is actually surprisingly interesting.

Its very, very short though. Shorter than Portal. A little hard to justify its price point, (really should have been half its price), and I don't see myself replaying it anytime soon.

If mods available on Steam count...

    MINERVA: Metastasis - 9/10

Absolutely sublime from start to finish, with only my own stupidity getting me stuck in two places (if playing, here's some clues: the power cores require TWO grenades, and the turrets you can place guard a door that needs opening from the other side). The author's technique of building maps vertically rather than horizontally work wonderfully here, packing a lot of gameplay into relatively small maps, and the visuals are gorgeous for the HL2 engine.

I HIGHLY recommend everyone who has HL2:Episode One check this mod out immediately. It's stunning.

    Fallout New Vegas 10/10
I just checked. It took over a year after FO3 to motivate me to play New Vegas. Because it is mechanically more of the same. You just need a break after 70 hours of Fallout 3 before you can tackle 80 hours of New Vegas.
While the game looks and plays the same a lot of things were changed for the better. The achievements are fairer. All 4 endings are complete and satisfying and it feels a lot more like a RPG. Thanks for that Obsidian.
Also play this game on Very Hard Hardcore with the jsawyer mod or it is way too easy.

    On the DLCs:

    Dead Money: 5/10

Everybody almost hates this one and I understand why. My head a-sploded so many times until I finally had enough and installed a mod that got rid of this mechanic. This DLC helps with two of the harder achievements (Desert Survivalist and ) but doesn't offer much else of use.
    asplode.jpg

    Honest Heats 6/10
Not as annoying as Dead Money but I personally didn't care much for this DLC either.

    Old World Blues 10/10
Wonderful piece of added content. A lot to do and explore if you choose to do so and a lot more of the open world aspect of the game, even though the area is kinda limited. Great humor, great story... I really loved it and you should play it.

    Lonesome Road 9/10
The most challenging of the DLC packs and going back to the normal game after this feels a bit weird but this one is worth playing. Even though it is incredibly linear.

    Gun Runner's Arsenal 10/10
Adds a bunch of challenges and guns to the main game. No extra story but all the new stuff is very powerful and I wouldn't want to miss the new guns. They cost a huge amount of caps though. But I bought a unique Recharger Laser Pistol at a low level and used it constantly until the end of the game. Recommended if you use jsawyer at the highest difficulty.
Also the FatMan from Fallout 3 returns in this DLC. Just don't blow yourself up with it okay!

    Couriers Stache 0/10
The Pre-Order DLC packs. Required for jsawyer but I never recieved the items because jsawyer removes them completely. It's for the better. You will find better stuff fast and getting all this crap at the beginning of the game doesn't help with the immersion. All the other DC popping up is bad enough.
  • Thrillville: Off The Rails 7/10

+7 for the awesome roller coaster designing parts, -3 for the rest of the game.
