They should at least make a Special Edition with the full possible planned game features, improved graphics, and whatnot for the Wii U. That wouldn't be too much to ask. The game is already done. And they're quite experienced now with having ported TP to the Wii and remaking OOT and LTTP with adding new features to already made games.

I have various responses I wanted to make to this, in no particular order.

    1) This can be overcome with a Homebrew USB Launcher for your Wii.

    2) Really? I've never had a console wear out on me, and I've had my PlayStation for ages.

    3) You need a GCN anyway for the GameBoy Player. Though you can't get component for it, S-Video is still acceptable. Further, an S-Video cable for GameCube also can also be used to give improved picture quality to an N64 and SNES.

    4) I have had great hesitation when considering getting a 360 because of the rampant hardware failure. I wouldn't have expected Nintendo's consoles to have hardware issues.

Sorry, replying to this has been on the back burner for a while, I meant to get to it a lot sooner. Anyway:

    1) Yeah, I know, but I don't really like doing Homebrew stuff with my consoles. It's no big, I've got another Wii anyway.

    2) I have a lot of other friends who got Wii's at launch that have had similar issues, and Guru I assume the your Wii with the drive failure was the one you got at launch? A lot of launch Wii's, but obviously not all, seem to have had some problems. The new one's been absolutely fine, though.

    3) Oh I still have my GCN, with the GameBoy Player still attached but I really don't use it enough to justify getting component cables, as nice as that would be.

    4) I think you'll find the newer 360's are fine, I haven't had any red ring problems with mine and it's about a year old. But don't use it that much. Mostly for Street Fighter and for the occasional game I can't get on PC.

    2. Yes, it was a launch Wii.

    4. I've only had my 360 since September, so I couldn't say from personal experience, but I've heard that the red ring issue was finally fixed with the 360 Slim. And all it took was Microsoft redesigning the whole damn console.

Nintendo would get a huge amount of backlash from doing that. They'd essentially be pulling a Capcom by releasing a game, then re-releasing it with some slight additions at retail price.

Maybe it's because I'm an older school gamer, but I don't care nearly as much about graphics as long as the story and gameplay are good.

Anyways, a couple of interesting things have popped up in the course of translations of Hyrule Historia. Kaepora Gaebora has now been confirmed to be Rauru. And the Hero's Shade from Twilight Princess is now confirmed to be the Hero of Time.

I think I have decided that Skyward Sword is not my favorite Zelda game. It is very very good, but it's not my absolute favorite. I think what got me confused about it is that it is new and exciting, so I've been hung up on how great it is.

I think what knocks it out of the running is:

    [stuff]
Oh, and also there is no minimap.

Really? That's a mark against it? I HATE the mini-map. I always turn it off.

Yes. Having the option would be nice, regardless of whether one uses it (which I do.)

The red ring issue honestly has been essentially fixed a lot sooner than that, but you could only be able to tell if you had a console manufactured after the fix by checking for some minute details on the back of the machine, so we've had people buying machines built before the fix complaining about the red ring throughout this thing's life. You can be absolutely sure that the problems that caused an unusual number of red ring errors has been fixed if you buy the new model, though.

For a screen size of 32", the full benefit of 1080P isn't visible at distances greater than 4 feet away.

    what about a 52 inch?

For a 52-inch television, you have to sit 7 feet or closer to see the full benefit. This page has a useful chart and a simple tool that will spit out the maximum view distance for whatever screen size you put in for 480p, 720p, 1080p, and 4K resolutions.

I'd also like to note that outputting at 1080p isn't what would fix Skyward Sword. People who have the hardware to run the Dolphin emulator and play Wii games in 1080p know that the games don't look THAT different. It's about other aspects of the graphics hardware than the output resolution.

Which is why I suggested they should make a special edition. The trees in particular look horridly like sprites. SPRITES.

You'd think so, but I didn't miss it, at all really. I always use it in Zelda games, and yet I didn't even notice it wasn't there in SS. Instead of the mini-map, the area map has had an upgrade, showing your position with detail (like you can see room features etc.)

That's great, but a better map doesn't make me like the idea of having to stop and open the map any time I want to see where I am in a room.

well, the cellestial brush is the master sword, issun is navi, and it has the same wolf technique as twilight princess

Gameplay wise I mean. You can find similarities in any story if you look hard enough.

Tip: Okami came out (on PS2) before Twilight Princess. :p

As for the celestial brush being the master sword, I have yet to see a zelda game that lets you create gusts of winds, bombs, channel water and electricity, swing on vines and blossom trees with a swipe of your sword.

Yes there are similarities between the two franchises, but I personally prefer the okami series. No zelda game has ever managed to make me cry. No zelda game has provided a story that I actually care about, and no Zelda game has the awesome towns and villages that make Okami(den) so special. In my opinion, Okami is the best Zelda game there never was.

As such, I'm pretty fanboyish about it (Both games top my best games list, with okamiden being the first game I played on the 3DS (screw actual 3DS games, I wanted to be a cute puppy!). So sorry if the above post sounded a wee bit aggresive. ^_^

I noticed the minimap was missing, and is kind of annoying to have to open the map to see where I am...but the areas so far are so small that I can't really get lost.

I'm liking Skyward Sword so far, though. I like the added stat elements that make it slightly more like a traditional RPG. Maybe they're paving the way for future titles to be even moreso. That I would like. Imagine a Zelda with some of the elements from The Elder Scrolls (though not near as much). That would be kinda fun.

This contest on Nintendo's Facebook has the possibility of winning replicas of the Master Sword and Hylian Shield. I figure why the heck not.

Imagine if Link could gain exp from killing monsters, with which use in levelling up his life, magic and attack power; then imagine Link refilling his life or magic by having sex with strange women.

oh, wait... that game already exists.

I'm going to end up getting a Wii U for the same reason I ended up getting a PSP. If nothing else about this console pans out, there will still be games on it from several series that I'm devoted to that won't be on any other system.

I used to think this when considering getting a 360 or PS3, but then I discovered how many games for those systems exist for PC, and are correspondingly available on such as Steam at reasonably inexpensive prices. Granted, there are many games for said consoles that are not on PC, but I now have so many Steam games that I hardly care anymore.

As for WiiU, I will consider buying it once they make a Zelda game for it. I could also say Metroid, but then Other M didn't factor in convincing me to buy a Wii (Prime 3: Corruption might have, though)
  • edited January 2012
Hard to argue there. But I know that there will be a Zelda on it, and so I know I'll be getting one. And if the cooler looking features of the console pan out, then that's a bonus.

As for Metroid, I was ridiculously excited for Metroid Prime 3, and I wasn't disappointed. Other M, on the other hand... I've had it since last Christmas and haven't played it yet. Here's hoping I can remember what the game-breaking bug is when I do get to playing it.

I still need to get around to playing the Metroid Prime games. I personally don't see what people have against Other M, but whatever. Didn't know there was a game breaking bug.

The only thing that worries me about the Wii U is the possibility of not being able to move all of my saves over from my Wii. Most games I've been able to put on SD cards, but Super Smash Bros. Brawl won't copy over. I do NOT want to have to replay that entire game to unlock everything.

First, install the Homebrew Channel, then use the Savegame Extractor to copy savegames that the Wii won't normally let you copy.

Riiiiight. I shouldn't have to do that, thank you very much. Nintendo should be considering that with the Wii U.
  • edited January 2012
No, you shouldn't have to, but you probably do. You said that you don't want to have to replay the game to get your unlockables, so I offered what I thought was the only option to accomplish it.

I think the reasoning behind that is something to do with wi-fi. I've noticed none of my wi-fi enabled games allow me to copy save data. I also don't want to have to play through the entire game yet again (I had to do so when I switched from the black and white US import version to UK PAL, as the saves were incompatible.)
As for metroid, play the prime games and then you'll see why everyone hates on Other M. The prime games were fantastically atmospheric, and the plot was as deep as you wanted it to be (with much of the plot and back story being told through scanned artefacts. The controls for the wii versions were amazing and intuitive, and the music was fantastic. I would definitely reccommend picking up the trilogy set (if you still can, it went out of print a while back.)

Other M was by no means a bad game. It just wasn't great. And Samus whined too much considering she's supposed to be the highly independant silent type.

I haven't enjoyed a Metroid game since Metroid Prime 2.

I actually do have the trilogy set, got a good deal on it too. And I didn't think Samus was whining. Plus, she was seen as the "silent, independant type" because she had no voice acting.

On the other hand, people see Link as the silent, independant protaganist, despite the fact that at least two incarnations of him have very defined personalities.

    Yes, and why is that?

It can't have anything to do with motion controls, I'm sure.

This is most likely why Nintendo is reluctant to give voice acting to Link. I suspect that no matter who they picked to voice Link, a large percentage of the fans would not be satisfied.

While that's a good reason to be reluctant, I have far bigger reasons to dislike the idea of voice acting in Zelda. We already have some issues within the games' universe thanks to mistranslations over the years, and that will just get worse if voice acting is added to the mix.

Plus, I'm sure no one wants a repeat of "I'm so hungry, I could eat an octorok!"

She was only that way because for years Nintendo philosophy was not to use text, or at least not much, for their characters. Two decades of a character not talking of course creates a certain image, yet totally contrary to that image, too many people wanted her to talk... much like they now clamor for Link to do the same. Then you give those people what they want, and it's not the voice they want to hear. It's not like Samus Aran could have perpetually been a silent, stony type. People are rarely like that.

End story: People have no idea what they want and listening to them is the worst thing a game producer can do. Establish a vision and go with it and if people don't like it, they won't buy it.
  • edited January 2012
So are you saying that they were mistaken for listening to people and making her talk, or that they can make her talk if they want to and to hell with anyone who disagrees?
  • edited January 2012
I think in any creative work, be it game design, movie production, any form of art or expressive medium, your vision has to come first. I feel like they bowed to pressure making her talk. It doesn't seem like a native idea to Nintendo. I feel like they let her talk without first having something for her to say. So yes I think to hell with those who disagree, if you're the director of the game, only go with something if its your conviction. At least then you won't straddle a mediocre line.
