LOL. I love the picture on Double Fine's website about the kickstarter countdown party.

    attachment.php?attachmentid=2914&stc=1&d=1331761103

For those who weren't watching the video, someone said they'd up their pledge to $100 if Ron put his shoe on his head. I'm glad someone captured a picture of it. :D

I only had time to watch for about five minutes and this occurred during those five. Woot.

Patronizing isn't going to help. There might be an element of nastiness within some of his posts. (Often abrasiveness is just a by-product of an honest opinion and a strongly-made argument.) But to look upon Dashing's posts as simply 'raging', and label his words as 'being nasty to people' is an insult, and is ignorant.

Yeah, real sorry for defending someone there, twunct!

    People are worth defending.

Fucking moronic ideas that are based on nothing even resembling the objective reality you and I inhabit are not worth defending.

    People were not attacked.

I dunno. That post was twice as long as my first post. And I waited about three months before posting anything.

Think about it. MrFatmire could be the next me!

That's actually quite a scary thought...

Kinda sad I missed the countdown party, but I got myself a shiny new account on the Double Fine forums! Now just need to find an extra several hours in each day...

I don't understand the difference between verbally attacking a person, and attacking anything and everything they say that isn't supported by a proper works cited page.

People have emotions. Devaluing someone's opinion has an emotional/psychological impact on said person and can therefore be reasonably perceived as an attack.

In other words, you're arguing that saying "you're fucking stupid" is different from saying "everything you fucking say is stupid without cited facts to support otherwise." This is a ridiculous argument to make.

It's like this, you see, let's say you have a co-worker and you generally get along with them. One day they say that you and your co worker decide to go out to get lunch. You suggest a family owned Mexican restaurant that has really nice good food. Your co-worker says that they don't want to go there because they probably have illegal workers. Now, all potential politics or racism aside, you know the family who runs the business and know that they run a honest legal establishment. You mention this to them and yet they still insist that they wouldn't want to go there. This might lead to a bit of frustration.

A few weeks later, you still get along on good terms with the co-worker, you just still think their statement was very stupid and misguided.

    There is a big difference.

No, because if you get along well you would have responded with "I know the family who runs that restaurant, and they don't do that," and you would also say so in a polite fashion that was not demeaning to your coworker's opinion.

If you instead said "That's a fucking stupid thing to say. Get your fucking facts straight before you say things like that," there then is no difference between an attack on your coworker and on their opinion because you're telling them that their opinion is worth shit. It's also rude, arrogant and pretentious.

Suffice it to say, approach makes all the difference.

    Oh, it's back.

I don't really have any argument to present here, except maybe that one side was saying "I wonder how much people doing X will have an impact on the end results" and the other side was saying "there probably won't be enough people doing X to have any visible impact," and I really don't think there's enough conflict between those two viewpoints to account for the level of debate that's occurring here.

I would like to point out that if somebody had wondered out loud about the idea of ordering an ice cream cone from a drive-through, and then grabbing it by the top with their bare hands just to freak out the cashier, I probably would have said that's incredibly dumb and why would anyone do that... but people do it.
  • edited March 2012
Except in the very beginning he was responding in that manner. Mainly asking why would one think that, then politely showing the data that showed that it wasn't able to be backed up.

Despite this, the point was still brought up more than once.

"I know the family who runs that restaurant, and they don't do that" maybe how it starts, but they respond with:
"Well, I know that a lot of Mexicans are working in the US illegally. I don't want to eat there."
"No, I KNOW them. I know they wouldn't run a business like that."
"I mean, there are so many illegals here I just can't trust them!"
"Ugh! No, that's not the kind of people they are! I know them PERSONALLY and the fact that you keep denying this with these stereotypes is horrible!"

Also, t's not an opinion. It's going against the facts. And constantly denying it in the face of someone who has already showed otherwise is kind of insulting in itself.

Had it not happened, would you have thought that it would have happened? Where would you have thought that this would have been a thing if it hadn't happened before? And even then, this is uncommon enough to not really be a problem.

Here's the thing, there has been no backing to show that dropping a backing was a thing ever before this whole thing happened. And even then, someone would have to go through great lengths and hoops (signing up with several services, registering a card) to even try to accomplish such a thing, wherein they would have dropped the backing number by .0001%. There was no reason to even think of this as an issue.

Ok that's enough... Agree to disagree....

cool it and act like an adult.
  • edited March 2012
That's not a very professional response. It's pretty much akin to "u mad".

The way I see this is going, it's going like this:

"hey! I repeated this several times, please just listen!"
    "wow you're mad."
"No, I'm really not, this is what I'm actually talking about!"
    "wow stop being a jerk"
"Ahh! I just can't you guys just listen?"
    "wow stop talking"

We have one person really frustrated because he can't get his thoughts across then we have a group that is just being completely dismissive with substanceless posts.

if people just stopped being dismissive and generally just stopped talking about this issue. It'd end. I want it to end. Please.

No its actually a fair warning to stop swearing and acting like a child his arguments are sound... The way he reacts is not..

I'm ending it. Dashing has made his point and been excessively hostile about it, and this topic has been run into the ground. From this point on, this thread is about Double Fine and not this bullshit, or I'm locking it and handing out bans.

Dashing, you're throwing a temper tantrum. You've made ridiculous exaggerations and behaved in an overly hostile manner to make your point. If you don't want people to treat you like a child, then stop acting like one. One more out of order post, and I'm going to give you two weeks to think about that.

    NOW FUCKING DROP IT.

I wish I had $100 to drop on the Kickstarter. I really wanted that snazzy t-shirt...

Oh well, still gave them $30 so I'd be able to get in on some sweet soundtrack action. I hope they manage to get Peter McConnell to make the game's music.

Ditto(to the $100). Between that and my new computer(mostly the computer), it looks like I'll be living on condiment sandwiches for the next couple months. Not really, but almost. Maybe. Are peanut butter and jam condiments? The grocery store aisle labels don't seem to think so, but I'm sceptical.

I make ramen with an egg in it.

It's a variation on my sister's recipe for homemade egg drop soup when we were kids (ie. cooking 1 beaten egg, water, and chicken bullion together in a coffee cup in the microwave.) Since chicken flavored ramen noodles come with a chicken bullion packet already, all I do is make the ramen per directions but add an egg.
