Obsidian's Project Eternity. Brought to you by folks like Chris Avelone, Tim Cane, and Josh Sawyer. I think Rather Dashing is having brain spasms.

Damn, they're getting kickstarted and still hogtie their supporters to Steam?!? That's borderline perverted. They can forget my money, that's for sure. I'll probably have enough of isometry after SR:R anyway. ;)

PayPal's possible for Broken Sword now - that's where my money goes.

I'd keep my eyes on it. The DRM topic is a MAJOR contention in their comments, and while for this particular set of people I'm willing to put aside my issues with funding a game that is locked into Steam, this is not true for a large enough portion of their audience that I would not be surprised to see a revision to that in the future.

    I'll keep you updated. ;)

I think that $10,000 + $30 shipping is pretty funny.
  • edited September 2012
I wish I had $10,000... because not only do I really want this game to get made, I could just drive over there. So I wouldn't have to spend extra on travel.

Looks terrible. Don't fund it. It's going to be an unfinished, buggy mess, and it's going to be like that shitty, ugly, bland, boring Planescape: Torment.
I'm lying. Fund it. Fund it. Fund it. Fund it. Fund it. Fund it.

FAQ altered less than 1 hour ago:
How will I get my digital copy of the game?

We are still exploring the idea of offering number of options, but one of those is definitely going to be Steam.

Less than a day in, and "exploring options" is already there. I expect "DRM-free" in less than a week, and would honestly be downright shocked if I didn't see it show up by the end of the campaign.
  • edited September 2012
This is the absolute best possible news for the RPG genre. :D

I would still give money to this if they made me walk barefoot through a pit of rusty nails and broken glass to retrieve my copy, so Steam is not going to be a deal-breaker for me. Still, I doubt they will maintain it as the only option as the campaign goes on.

Just so you know, a PayPal option has been confirmed as being forthcoming. My guess is they'll put it up after we hit the goal, which is happening sooner rather than later(we're at 52% 7 hours after it went up).

Baaaaawww... I want to back Broken Sword at a higher level, but have already spent so much money on adventure-gamey Kickstarters this year! Why must my favourite come so late? :(

[Project Eternity] Still "Steam PC", still not backing a single dollar. If they announce that they'll have a DRM-free version, I will remain skeptical. After all, I would have caught the 20$ option early if it wasn't for this kind of backer buttkicking, even WITH PayPal.

[Broken Sword] Broken Sword is now backed. All that stuff feels really strange. I mean, these are four games I paid for now (although I technically did not "buy" them), and I'll be lucky if I see even one of them this year.

If Steam, why not also GOG?

The rest of the franchise is on GOG, and they seem to be adding recent titles (eg. BTTF) so I would think that would placate haters of Steam's DRM.

You got the game he's referring to mixed up. Broken Sword *is* DRM-free and doesn't have a $20 level. He was referring to the Project Eternity Kickstarter, which has yet to come out on one side or the other when it comes to DRM and had a $20 "early bird" price that is five dollars lower than the base cost to get the game.
  • edited September 2012
hmm. Well, someone at Obsidian should still look into it, imo.

Because, really with Steam and GOG the consumer could have it either way: Steam has the community, achievements and automatic patching; GOG is DRM-free and has a ton of extras.

Depending on which way the consumer leans, it would seem to me that one service or the other would fit the bill for most people so long as said service's library had games to support their interests. Yes, yes I know GOG stands for Good Old Games, but that shouldn't stop publishers looking to them as a potential storefront as the more games GOG has in their library the more money GOG makes.
  • edited September 2012
Also GOG has long departed from selling only "old" games. They started it by self-publishing their "Witcher" games, and by now they are selling numerous new independent games (like "Resonance", "FTL", "Gemini Rue", etc...)

...You do realize that those other things include "Beneath a Steel Sky 2", right? Right!?

Ah, forget Beneath a Steel Sky please. They'll make a new kickstarter campaign for that, I promise. The whole one million, BaSS2 greenlit thing is completely bogus shallow nonsense. They will make this game no matter what - they know the interest is there, and they know that an individual kickstarter will bring them more than 200,000$.

$800k is reached. There's also an update with the video where we can see how the game looks in motion. It's not bad but I don't like George's posture at all - he looks like a bully.

It doesn't say it's reached when I look at the page. Are you sure? That would mean that "our wildest fantasies will be realized"...:winslow:

So you guys may have heard about the Kickstarter-like Gambitious, probably through the forthcoming Earth No More from the guys who did Duke Nukem Forever,, but there's another project there I wanted to bring up because it's... well, it's fucking MUSHROOM MEN, and I adored the Wii game.

The new one's called Truffle Trouble and it appears very similar to those block-puzzle sections from Catherine. Hmm.

Where's that Anachronox 2 kickstarter?? Oh, yeah, nonexistant.

It seems Project Eternity's concept art phase has already been affected by fan feedback.

This piece of art was in an article not too long ago. People didn't like it for some reason. Now, in the most recent update, she looks like this:

You'd need a stretcher after wearing that breastplate. All that extra metal in front would make the thing top heavy and result in serious back trauma.

Hey everybody, let's kickstart a Star Trek pilot! With Tim Russ, Walter Koenig and more!

    Eh, I'm good.

If Star Trek is to be continued as a series - which I'd LOVE - it has to be a new crew. Cut all the guest stars out. "Of Gods and Men" was GODSANDMENAWFUL, the writing was abysmal, the stars just thrown in stilted, without purpose, no talent lost there. Although I hit the emergency eject after 20 minutes, it was so unbearable. *sigh* I love Alan Ruck, and I mean since Ferris, but that wasn't a good step in his career, seriously not.

A sequel to Star Trek series, with a bit of spunk, yes please, but not by these guys.

I'm watching Of Gods and Men, and the first things I think of are: "Why did they have a shot zooming in close on a face in shadow? It can't be for effect because you can't see the face." and "1701-M? 40 years after Uhura was assigned under Kirk? How can you get through 13 iterations of the Enterprise in 40 years?"

EDIT: Okay, so they acknowledge Kirk's apparent death while saving El-Aurian refugees from the ribbon, which happened 28 years after Kirk took command of the TOS Enterprise (2265-2293), even if the rest of the 40 years is an alternate timeline, it still leaves 12 years to go through 11 ships (starting at B). Nevermind that the Enterprise M in this is a Constitution Class ship, which is smaller than Voyager and less advanced than even the Enterprise B.

Also, the Guardian of Forever gave Kirk and Spock the chance to return to the past and fix it when McCoy went through, rather than the timeline instantly relocating everyone as happens here.

I won't nitpick everything (though I could). The 2009 reboot is fantastic. These Youtube commentors are idiots... though I suppose that's nothing new really.
