I've played through each episode so many times and exhausted all dialogue options/combos and although we've got an engrossing story and a decent protagonist, they honestly have made it so that we get the same results each play through with the exception of sparing one person or another, even then the person is usually disposed of pretty quickly making our choice pointless. Again i love the game, hate the lies. If you disagree please reply and describe a choice that actually differs my experience to yours, like promised at the start of every episode.
I wouldn't say it's intended since I really don't care about any of the other characters. Ben literally offers nothing. Kenny is OK but he is going to be super angsty in the next two chapters until he randomly dies. The new characters aren't very interesting. Clem is really all you have and it's obvious that the last episode will probably be just you and Clem until Lee turns into a walker and Clem shoots him or something.
I've been loving the previous episodes but I would give episode 3 a 7/10 because the illusion of choice is really starting to become apparent. No matter what you do, the same things are going to happen. The only real difference might be a line or two of dialogue. I think it would have been better if the game gave you a choice of who to save; a method of whittling down your group's numbers instead of Telltale deciding it for you. If you actually had to choose between people to save, it would add more emotional tension and drama because you would feel responsible for who you didn't pick to save. I would have had it so that there was a choice between the Carly/Doug and Ben argument. It felt cheap to negate the one major difference between episode 1 and 3 in such a throwaway death. I also felt that there was a lot of forced emotional manipulation in this episode, like in Mass Effect 3 when the kid died on Earth. Duck had been completely useless until this episode where he had a nice moment, then as punishment for finally coming around to Duck, Telltale killed him. Then Katja died too, even though she seemed perfectly emotionally stable. I understand the source material is dark but there's a way to do things without seeming manipulative and forced.
At the very least, I would have preferred a brief interactive mini-game where you tried to save the person who had been shot (carrying them to the RV as they bleed out, prompting walkers to chase after you) before they inevitably died on the road after you realized that there's nothing you could do for them. I think it would have been more emotionally poignant to have a scene like that, where the character realizes they're done for - they've lived through the apocalypse and now they're going to die because some paranoid bitch wrongfully accused them and shot them. It would have offered better closure to the the Carly/Doug arc instead of the abrupt stop Telltale went with. Plus, giving supplies to the bandits really wasn't that bad of a decision. Lily just shot someone because Telltale wanted this episode to be super dark. It's hard to actually develop characters; killing them is the easy way out.
Episode 3 shocked me at every turn! I was in shock for at least a full minute when carley died. Very emotional episode. I like Chuck. Omid's okay. Christa seems like another Lilly (imo.)
First post!
So we can't save carley, and the same thing happens to Doug? And Lilly leaves no matter what choice you pick? Katjaa and duck always die? Sounds a lot like illusion of choice to me. Still good though, just not as good.
I totally agree, I've said it before and I will say it again. I loved Ep 1 & 2, because they gave us a lot of choice (especially the first one), but this one was kind of like watching an unevenly paced animated movie.
Also I guess I'm more pissed because this episode basically did the biggest horror movie pet peeve I have which is basically killing off like half the group in 30 minutes and almost in worst taste, very obviously replacing them with Chuck, Omid, and Christa (though I do enjoy Chuck's company).
Learn from Bioware and PATCH IT UP, bring choice back, there is so much more character exploration and interest if they all aren't dead.
All that being said, I'd give Ep. 1 & 2 like a 9.5/10 and Ep. 3 a 7.
I know Carley will die on episode 3 because Lilly shot her.
What about Doug? If we choose Doug, what will happen to him? Getting shot as well?
Doug tries to save Ben, but Lilly shoots him straight in the back of the head.
[Graphic novel spoilers below]
Though... it wouldn't be ridiculous to bring either back... I mean Carl Grimes got shot in the face and lived... and he's like what, 9?

Yeah, except for the fact that he got immediate medical attention right after.

It would be ridiculous though. Carl got immediate, professional, medical attention. Carly/Doug did not. Carl also wasn't stranded in the middle of the forest like them, or unarmed like them, and he certainly wasn't thousands of miles away from the group like Carly and Doug.
episode 3 sucked, they need to add a patch so u can go back and save carly. and in this episode the choices u make don't really matter. the story pretty much stays the same no matter what choices u make
Just like everyone has all ready said the reason I was disappointed with episode 3 was because my previous choices didn't matter. I had two games one with Carley and one with Doug and now I might as well scratch one of them since my choices didn't matter after this season. So while i played episode 3 a couple times through to try and save my favorite characters I quickly realized it now became one story. Its not that I think the episode was awful but I hope episode 4 has at least one twist or two to make me start up again a second story line for the finale in 5. I would just hate that I only play it through once and find that if I play it again I get the same results and only have one path to choose from. I also felt like there was a lot less exploring which took away from the experience. There were no quick decisions either other than shooting the zombies which was interesting and new but didn't make me feel I was under a pressure cooker to make a decision. Hope season 4 is good otherwise I won't pay for 5 even with how far I've played.
Why the heck is Omid so damn happy that we have a child with us?
Is he a pedo? o_O
Don't like Crista. The first I get the chance to ditch her like I ditched Lilly, I will :P
Same with Omid, don't trust that couple on bit.
They're too interested in Clem.
Quick question, is there any way to get Christa to not be pissed off at you for taking Clem with you to the abandoned station and getting ambushed by those three walkers?
Also, can someone please PM or just post here if and how it's possible to prevent Katjaa and Duck from dying?? I'm super curious...
Now that that's done, back to my review... I think Ep. 3 was brilliant! I'm super looking forward to the rest of the season, season 2, and the rest of my life playing nothing but Walking Dead. Thanks TT.
Of course you can prevent Katjaa and Duck from dying! It's a game about choice, after all, though you do have to start the episode over and irritate Katjaa at every possible opportunity and interaction. This way, even though Duck is dying, she's so angry with you that rather than kill herself, she follows you back to the train to give you a piece of her mind. She also doesn't want a jerk like you, who's been hassling her, to kill her son, so she starts screaming at Kenny to grow a pair and off their son himself. It's a great scene. You'll never guess who puts down Duck!
At that point, Lilly, who's been following the group on foot, catches up with you at the junction of the train and the RV. Fireworks ensue like you won't believe! (But I don't want to tell you any more and spoil the surprise.)
If you're fast enough you can probably prevent Duck from getting bitting.
But you probably have to be really fast with the sniper at that part.
I missed my first shot :P
So i have a complaint, unlike anyone on this site ever...
SPOILERS
So i had a game in which i was on lilly's side, and then she shot carly in the face. brought her to the train, she stole the van. I then saved the game and quit until next time.
When I loaded my game, i spoke with that kid (i forget his name, the one in the blue jacket) and he was saying that he's sorry for killing Carly.
WTF!
a. this spoils the surprise for if i made different decisions leading up to carly's death
b. how retarded is a game that is tailored to your previous decisions if it cant even remember my decisions correctly? it ruins the WHOLE PREMISE of why we like this game.
SUCH b.s. The episode itself was good, had its jaw-dropping moments, but it felt ruined after this happened, like nothing i was doing was actually being saved correctly anyway.

Are you from Finland because i see that your account name is vainamoinen/väinämöinen...When is the fourth episode gonna come? Am i the only girl here:)?
I loved episode 3 it was awesome!! I freaking love The Walking Dead! But i still liked episode 2 more it was soo scary...and exciting!
Cheers to the writing team. They totally shocked me with the entire episode. I've tried the Lilly is my girl route and the Kenny is my homeboy route. Both choices are still epic, but I was hoping I could figure out a way to go with Lilly when she steals the RV and change the story (no such luck). From the opening scene, deciding if you would use the girl as human bait or kill her off to end suffering was gut wrenching. Any game that can effect you in a way that you actually feel that connected to a character is in a league of their own. When Ducky got bit I literally said out loud "NO" and felt horrible killing him. Then walking up and realizing that Kat had killed herself (or walking with and seeing depending on your choices) was mind blowing. You could feel the absolute pain and despair that Kenny felt after loosing his entire family. I certainly did not expect the game to change this much in 3 episodes. They have certainly kept the spirit of Kirkman's The Walking Dead, no one is safe, as they shouldn't be. This is the zombie apocalypse after all. Finally, who the hell has been talking to Clem on the Wallie-Talkie's?
i hate how clem is like "can i tell my parents what happened" i was like "come on clem its not such a good idea" she replied "you cant tell me what to do" i was WTF im trying to protect her and she says that i kinda wanted to throw her out but then i was like shes a kid afterall lol
My game screwed up and I could only save Doug, which was fine because he was helpful at building stuff but had bad defense/offense skills. I felt that Carly's death was forced. Like they didn't want to continue writing sappy romance scenes. Which I agree with since it is the ZA but I still wish there was cute moments between them until they found a good stable home or they were saved by the government.
Honestly, I liked Lily! She was unstable after Kenny killed her father (I don't care if he was a douche they don't turn automatically so he still had a chance) But I left her because I was unsure if I wanted someone who would kill someone without evidence.
Ben is just a kid he's lonely and people make mistakes but I don't think we can afford mistakes so I'm still on the fence about him. I really want to punch him in the face a bunch for making a deal with the bandits without consolting me! I mean I GAVE YOU FOOD!!
Omid is a funny guy but I'm a little weirded out about how Lee acts with him..Was that just because of a choice I made earlier or is Lee being an ass to omid for everyone? Christa is like a Lily/Carley and I got her on my good side after admitting I was bad at what I was doing.
I liked kenny I don't know why everyone beats on him. I really felt for him in episode 3 and katjaa really suprised me..(Okay not really kind of expecting one of the parents to commit suicide) I don't think I can trust kenny because he's pretty much a loose cannon and the only thing he wanted is for his family to be safe.
Clem-Clem!! I love her but I'm scared that if there is a choice like Find her parents or get on the boat if I pick get on the boat she might run off to find the mystery guy. I love the relationship between Lee and Clem-Clem
Loved it, the most intense episode yet. I reacted to pretty much everything. Beginning to hate Kenny when his ruthlessness comes up, telling everyone I was a killer, the supplies being stolen. As soon as the bandits came over the wall I couldn't stop saying "Oh shit!" until we pulled away in the RV. Didn't want anyone to get killed there, because nobody is safe. When Carley got killed I stumbled into my living room and babled something about it so that my cats looked at me funny before I went back to continue the game.
Left Lilly on the side of the road. Teared up when Ken and Lee had the heart to heart in the train (I managed to talk him down). That was some really great writing that added depth to his character I think. I began sobbing when he stopped the train because he's been my best friend in the game since Hershel's farm all the way back in Episode 1 and it was so painful to watch him bargain with Kat. I took Duck out myself so he wouldn't have to go through with that.
This game is something special. I've never felt as connected to any video game character in any game I've ever played until this one. It truly speaks volumes that the writers can make you feel so close to these fictional characters that you feel like you lost your best friend when they kill them off. Kudos TellTale, and keep up the good work!
When my Lee reaches Savannah, we're getting on a boat and giving the finger to all the walkers left on the shore drooling.
Sarcasm aside i seriously hope we get to see Ed and Diana in Episode 4. As for this episode it was really dark for me. It's like the bullets are hitting the living, rather than hitting the dead!
As for this episode it was really dark for me. It's like the bullets are hitting the living, rather than hitting the dead!
The way I see it, there are sooo many zombie shooters out on the market (im still waiting for that perfect one though but that aside) where all you do is 'shoot zombies' that for me is what makes The Walking Dead so refreshing and awesome.
Here's a game about zombies but the PEOPLE are more dangerous than the undead.
if Lee and the guys were all running around killing zombies like boss's all episode it would feel, for me, like 'yet another zombie killing game'.
It's the treachery, backstabbing, bitching and fighting among the group that makes this game so much more interesting an experience.
-I chose to not kill the girl.
-I told EVERYONE my business.
-I left Lily.
-Shot Duck.
-Pushed Omid off the bridge, then regretted it because I thought maybe I shouldn't have.
-I made up for it by grabbing him first.
Shocked by Carly's death, felt AWFUL about Duck ( due to unfortunate events with my own daughter being in the hospital, it was painful to watch Duck struggle ), never expected Kat to shoot herself.
Kenny actually kicked MY butt because my reflexes were so slow. I have a love/hate relationship with him, anyway. Did anyone have a drink with Chuck? My Lee didn't because I wanted him totally focused.
For some reason it seemed shorter to me. Even taking a break to rush to the hospital.
I loved the episode, it really busted us out of this 'Motel' box, while really breaking boundaries on par with the T.V. series with the death of duck and the suicide of Kaatja.
The ONE, problem I had, was the shooting of Carley / Doug.
I'm not going to rant and rave about refunds and re-writes, but I will say I'm pretty dissapointed. those two characters really set people's saves appart, and were the only solid tangible proof anyone had done anything differently. To just kill em off like that reminded me how constrained this game was to a hungry fanbase, and just made me think of the what ifs if telltale had had more time.
One thing I did like about this part, however, was the way in which the two characters went. Doug, trying to save ben and Lilly killing Carley, at least they didnt try to pass Doug off as the villain.
This episode has so much good storytelling, writing and everything here, but 'The Shooting' really burst my bubble, and reminded me that now all we have to compare our saves are small differences we now have nothing to show for. but my hopes are high for episode 4, they can still throw in some shocking stuff, i'm sure.
P.S. I'm not going on about romance, as my saved character was Doug.
P.P.S. If Ben tops himself in any way in the next episode I am gonna flip out from the cliche'
Comments
What about Doug? If we choose Doug, what will happen to him? Getting shot as well?
My first time choice was Carley because we need sharpshooter.
Is a good shot! Meaning she can use a gun well. It doesn't at all represent her personality(she kills babies in the comics!)
I wouldn't say it's intended since I really don't care about any of the other characters. Ben literally offers nothing. I`m guessing October 31
LOL, I love Billy Madison.
No , doesn't look like it. Her voice actress apparently posted that Telltale had planned the characters death for quite some time.
