I can't say I've been completely on top of the news about this game, but the weird thing (to me) about this game's release is that it seems like Activision just kind of dumped it out on the market. No big pre-order buildup on Steam, no substantial previews on the console podcasts. It feels like the publisher knew it wasn't going to be great, and rather than spend any additional development or promotional budget on it, just quietly pushed it out there while the third season was still running and hoped for the best.
I've also noticed that some of the reviews are complaining about poor storytelling, an expectation particular to this franchise. And I can't help feeling like Telltale's efforts pushed that expectation higher within the video game community. And in this semi-head-to-head case, I suspect we're seeing market results unseen in a long time, that is to say...
sounds like old school gaming days like goldeneye 64/doom style reloads
probably others games did that but i forgot which
Back in those days they couldn't do it much better, and I understand that  . But nowadays it's kind of pathetic, especially if it's the signature weapon of the game.
I'm somewhat shocked that people are bidding high on this game, it's as if they're not aware of how bad it is, and that it'll possibly drop heavily during the next couple of months.
I wonder if people who buy the game at a high price feel ripped off afterwards for the game not be what they expected to.
Just because someone's a fan it doesn't mean fan's gotta accept it regardless of how bad it is, that's ridiculous.
The amount of 4-5 star rating reviews on Amazon are from fans who even though they know the game is garbage they still like it only because it's part of The Walking Dead franchise.

I can't wait!!
I'll put this sweet piece on top of my game's shelf

Finally i'll be able to get a proper disk release!
The logic I'm using is "Hey, the last Walking Dead game was awesome, I'm going to buy this whatever!". I'd imagine it sold quite a bit on brand-name recognition alone. Never underestimate the stupidity of idiots.
If you take a look at the vgchartz.com charts (as of march 23), Survival Instinct is actually doing pretty good with ~162.000 sold units on XBox and PS3 alone, and that is counting the Top10 entries only and disregarding Steam sales.
It's definitely the the franchise that pushed the game up there, but from what I've read there are also quite a few people enjoying the game, so it's obviously all about taste and expectations again.
While I would hardly take that as gospel, as a very rough guide that doesn't seem altogether terrible. I'd find it hard to imagine the game wouldn't break even at the very least.

Look at Tomb Raider, for example. According to VGChartz, the game has sold 1.44 million copies. According to the developers, the game has sold more than 3.4 million copies. VGChartz' sales estimates are about as accurate as asking your mother to guess how many copies a game sold.
That said, I don't think they will lose much money, if any, from Survival Instincts. I doubt the game had a budget of more than $5 million, probably considerably less.
VGChartz counts the retail sales, not the sales a developer makes to retailers, which are obviously a LOT higher. It's not like a video game company gives physical copies of their games for free to the shops selling them. It is also quite obvious that a game developer earns only a tad bit of the money you spend on the final product.
They also ignore digitaly sold copies, as they probably don't have access to any numbers here. These would only be available if the devs (if a direct download was available), or platforms like Steam would give their numbers to the press.
This is also why the Survival Instinct sales are probably even a lot bigger, as The PC release was Steam only, so no physical copies exist.

The 3.4 million figure accounts for copies that were sold (digitially or physically), not just shipped.
Also, what is the point of this post? You just restated what I already said.

That many were sold? That's quite a surprise.
I do wonder if people felt scammed and disappointed for buying something they were expecting to be far beyond better.
Anyway, I don't see what fans see in this game that's actually good (except the voice actors) because there's nothing really worth being defensive about and giving it a 4/5 or 5/5 scores (on Amazon for example).

Well, it's a game to a well received TV-show... what did you expect?
As I said earlier, I'd rate it a 5.5/10, which is actually a pretty bad ranking in my opinion... says something like: "If you're a real fan, it might be for you, if not, keep away..."
I actually enjoyed the time I spent with the game, but have no real drive to get back to it and even finish it. Says a lot I guess...
Too bad they took The Walking Dead as a name for a shitty game. I even see people misleading between the A€tivi$ion game and Telltale game. This makes me mad.
It's an easy mistake to make, what with one just being called The Walking Dead: The Game.
Just try and stay calm, and explain to people that they're two very different games by two very different developers. I know people can be persuasive in their ignorance, but if you remember that you're in the right, you should be fine.
They should make the DLC free but what exactly would be the point, I mean, people are misinformed and this isn't getting advertised so it wouldn't exactly improve anything.
Heck, Telltale's The Walking Dead Episode 1 (on Xbox) is free again for a limited time. Anyone can buy the complete game for 800 MSP ($10).
I remember my friend saying he got the walking dead game and I had to try and figure out which one it was because he was vague on what he was doing. Eventually I just asked "Is your guy black or white" and I got my answer (it was Telltale's).
Sorry I don't believe in supporting an obvious cash grab and allowing the publisher to think they can do this multiple times
Didn't Activision already do that with Family Guy Back to the Multiverse? So this is the second time this happened? I think there was a bit more gameplay shown of this game before it came out while Family Guy only had a few screenshots and then a trailer the day it came out

...ahem. Sorry, got a little drunk with power there.

No, even DOOM has reload animations
Not defending Walking Dead, just trying to act smug and superior, just like everyone else on teh interwebs.
Close gate -> open gate -> zombies walk through gate -> zombies turn around and try to tear down gate.
Priceless.
*sneezes*

I sort of feel bad for the buyers who're getting a mess of a game.
i wonder if ebay has ever sold an actual 'polished turd' before ?
This video's fitting for what you've just wrote:

It's understandable... i was really looking forward to this game after that interview, i thought it was going to be great.
Of course, despite being an asshole, I "am" the "glass-half-full" type..... so take that for what it is.

Guess it's not going to be released because the sales and the game itself is terrible.
Call of Duty games are worth for the multiplayer mode, they're actually really good in that aspect. No complains there.
When sales figures show up this is one of the places to look for:
http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=the+walking+dead
Probably +/- = 0. Not gaining any money but not losing either.
VGChartz is laughably innacurate. Not only are some countries not counted at all, digital sales are disregarded.
0 sales for Survival Instincts? I wish.
Plus, they only listed the retail sales for Telltale's TWD. Fucking lawl.
[SARCASM] Well at least it sounds like they know what they're doing xD [/SARCASM]
