The battery conspiracy

edited August 2012 in The Walking Dead
Do not read this posting, if you haven't played the game yet. Knowing this part of the plot will most certainly annihilate all your pleasure of playing the game. You have been warned... In fact, don't read it at all because it's stupid.

Yes, it was very funny to encounter the problems that Carly had with her radio, but seriously? That kind of destroyed the atmosphere a little. How can a person be that stupid? Even in such a stressful situation...

1.) She doesn't check for batteries in the radio, when it doesn't work?
2.) She doesn't know how batteries look like? "I wouldn't know what to look for"
3.) She puts them in the wrong way?

w00T? Clementine is smarter, than her. She knows how to operate a radio (wt)! Anyway, this element of the game might be too humoristic. It kind of counteracts the tension of the sincerity of the situation they're in.

I'm amazed that she stayed alive that long. Well, she probably will always need somebody to save her ... like Doug and Lee (if you choose to) did. Does this make her valuable for the player? Because men feel good about helping the helpless damsel in distress? But to be honest ... she won't survive episode 2 anyway, right? She probably kills a lurker halfway, gets bitten and then she walks backwards in a pitchfork or something.

Im amazed she was a radio reporter and didn't know how to use a radio, was she lying or what

In her defense, being a radio reporter means she writes news stories and talks into a microphone. She has tech guys that deal with all the techy stuff. She doesn't have to know how to work a battery operated radio.

I get the feeling Doug/Carley will die in Episode 2. It'd be kind of difficult for that "Who did you save?" choice to carry on through the entire series.

And while Carley may be technologically illiterate, she does know how to use a gun. :p

The funny thing is, this sort of thing where a character acts ignorant to obviously set up a puzzle wouldn't seem nearly so out of place in Monkey Island or Sam & Max or even Back to the Future. But the characters in Walking Dead are so realistically written that it stands out.

While we're talking about the radio, I've got to ask something.

I didn't fix the radio (I couldn't find the second battery, which I guess puts me in the same league as Carley. ). It seems like fixing it was completely optional, and as far as I can tell failing to fix it didn't change much. Does anyone have an idea what fixing the radio actually does?

She says thank you and you listen to her friend in the radio station getting eaten or something. Then you can act very caring and concerned and she will remember that.

One battery was on the floor close to Clem and the other one was in a shelf.

I agree, but I also think that is very realistic for her to not know how to operate one. She is a radio reporter out of Atlanta. Big city, big radio station. They really do have tech guys that work on all of the equipment, while reporters touch nothing but the mic. She probably has never owned something so old as that radio looked to be. It probably belonged to Lee's father and was quite old. A cellphone and a tv remote look nothing like it.

Other than hearing a newscast, nothing much. I guess it makes Lee realize how bad things are out there, like he doesn't already know.

Do you want to give a gun to someone like that? She might forget which end to point at the bad guy. In reality I wouldn't. Do you remember the scene in the tv show, where the blonde lady almost kills the motor cycle guy with a rifle bullet?

ROFLMAO! You're so bad. Maybe she has electric ones instead? They don't have to be battery operated.

    :D

Then it would really be more like a Sam & Max game. Saint Row: the walking d**do? Pardon my French.

Anyway .. so you think it's possible that younger people, than me, did never use any kind of battery or would not know that old radios work with such? If not, will we soon be there? Interesting ... I'm 29 years old and the younger generations already don't know about stuff I grew up with? So depressing! They at least might have problems recognising floppy disks and casettes.

Being young is only part of the problem. Young and not experienced with such devices is what's wrong. There could be many reasons for it. She may not have had living grandparents as she grew up, or parents for that matter. People that would have educated her about older devices. She could have been one of those pampered rich kids that do not have to do much thinking for themselves as they grow. I know many people in their 20's that haven't a clue about things I grew up around. (I'm in my 40's btw) I also know some young women who hardly know how to put gas in their car, much less how to insert a battery into a device. I'm not being sexist, it is the truth, sadly enough.

It's okay. Some people need to be the zombies in a zombie apocalypse ;)

Well, I don't know everything myself. But at least in Europe they sell batteries in almost every store. At least she should know how a barrery looks like. Except Carly also has some guys that go shopping for her.

Anyway, that was fun to discuss. Let's see what she does in episode 2. Maybe I should start a fan club afterwards.

Some people's brains just shut down under stress. She was already having trouble with it and might have just been trying to tell herself that it was broken and there was no hope; which a lot of people would think. I've seen people have similar brainfarts under far less stress.

She'll die, I am almost certain of it. We'll go food foraging and she'll get bitten by a lurker. Watch and see. lol

Meh. It was a bit weak for a "puzzle", but then again, it was a very small part of two and a bit hour game (for me anyway).

I don't think Carley was saying she does not know what a battery looks like when she says, "I wouldn't know what to look for." I think she is saying she has no clue what kind of battery to look for. I mean, there are many kinds of batteries, and many sizes too. Could be quite confusing for the little lady.

If you try and give her the remote control, they both mention that they're the wrong type, and I think Carley says something about needing the "Chunky ones" from memory......

Ah, see? She has a slight idea about them but not any detail. Last time I checked, batteries did not come in a "chunky" size. hehe

Ah, you guys are just making excuses for her because she's cute.
  • edited April 2012
Carley was smart enough to save Lee and Clementine twice. Who cares about the batteries? Great, now I feel like such an ungrateful jerk for saving Doug :(

I found both batteries and didn't finish the puzzle. This item was carried up until the ending part at the motel. I find this curious because the energy bars that I have hoarded were gone as opposed to the batteries and Lee's family pic. Would this item carry over to episode 2? Like you could use it in a flashlight or something just to make your life at the motel with no electricity more easier? What do you think?

You're the first I have heard that did that. That is an interesting theory. Quite possible too. Considering the batteries for the radio are probably D or C cells. Hmmmm.

Carly wasn't that bright at all. I didn't give a single thought in saving Doug.
He was one of the forum managers when I first joined was smart enough to program a remote to activate tvs in a different building to attract the zombies away from them

Carly meanwhile put bullets in her purse and not in her gun...

Give her a break. Those were extra bullets. She just wasn't smart enough to make sure she wasn't empty. :p

The battery case is plain offensive to women and radiojournalists.

Sorry, I guess you might only end up with the photo in the second episode or no item at all. It's usually like that in telltalegames games that you start with none or different items every episode, except for maybe some trademark items, like SAM's gun or items relevant for the main plot arch. They are usually not that mean that you can save items for riddles/problems in future episodes.

It's also a bit offensive to the player. It's an obviously constructed problem and it's way too easy to solve it. ;)
  • edited April 2012
Well.. we really have no idea how much time will pass between the end of Ep 1 and the beginning of Ep 2. If it isn't immediate (quite possible considering the heavier clothing in the preview) the available items could very well be completely different.

    rotten candy bars? YAY!

I could see saving Doug because Carly had a gun and should have been more capable of protecting herself, but I would probably save her in real life.

Two reasons. If you save Doug you don't have time to get her gun, which is a good commodity in an apocalypse, and more women equals more repopulation ;op

The batteries thing tho... unless this takes place a few years from now, is pretty dumb. I mean, I had a gf in Florida who had no idea what the windshield ice scraper in my car was for. Also couldn't pronounce "coincidence" or memorize a menu to keep a job at a restaurant....so those kind of women do exist, but I don't think they'd be able to land a job as a journalist lol

End of the day, it was a light puzzle thrown into the game. Not necessary but I didn't find it offensive really either. Overall great story

I assumed something as jarringly ridiculous as Carly being battery-derp'd was some sort of inside easter egg reference to a previous Telltale game. Sam and Max maybe?

That really is the most reasonable way to explain it. The radio is not working, so she checks everything BUT the battery compartment. Then she gets batteries and is so hectic in plugging them in that this fails too. It's... human, really.

BTW, while we're discussing who's stupid, I actually didn't solve the puzzle. Gave Carly the first battery and was surprised that Lee continuously told her to "still search for her batteries" afterwards. I was convinced that batteries on store shelves always come in pairs. Thought it was a bug, didn't search on. DUH!

i eventually got the batteries and put them in for her then a little later after i'd rescued glenn i talked to her and chose the 'state the obvious your co workers are zombie chow now' statment her reaction while harsh was hilarious !!

How can a grown woman not know about batteries? And on top of that, once you DO get batteries, she puts them in BACKWARDS?

Honestly, this is less realistic than the zombies!
  • edited April 2012
I find it totally believable actually.

People can be really smart in some ways and drooling idiots in others.
Also only a tiny percent of people today have and use a portable radio anymore, let alone even know what a C battery looks like
