I think Carley was a total mess and not thinking correctly. She even says so if you ask her.

Her hand is obviously absolutely steady when she fires a gun, but battery basics escape her completely.

I experienced the same under extreme stress at work, which has so far happened twice. The important, dire things at hand I still did with the utmost precision, but everything else, especially the most standard actions, I completely fucked up. So, yeah, I can understand what was going on with Carley.

Add to that the shock of seeing people die and Bob's your zombie uncle. ;)

Ditto on this one. From a biological perspective, stress of his caliber triggers fight or flight. Any other actions are more or less shut down by the brain. It's a safety mechanism.

This would be more believable if it was set in year 2020 because many things that use batteries are starting to use built in rechargeable batteries. And probably the only people with radios with D-Size Batteries would be survival nuts.

As a female, I wasn't offended by the fact that Carley was an idiot when it came to the radio. I did think it was very odd though... even if she didn't know how a radio like that worked she should have knowledge of updated technology (such as an ipod) in which case I would fully expect her to check the radio for a port to plug in a charger and in searching for that port would come across the place for the batteries. If she's ever used something like a remote control or flashlight or vibrator as some of you fine gents have suggested she should have known that batteries were what it needed. You can usually guess the size by looking at the slots and even if she couldn't guess the least she could do is check the store for any kind of batteries. Seriously, how stupid could she be?! Even if she didn't know, why the heck didn't she ask Doug?! I mean he IS the "tech guy".

As a gamer, I was slightly offended by how crap that puzzle was.

As for the "she was under stress" theory, I can kinda see that but personally I'd jump at the chance to make myself busy looking for batteries rather than sitting there thinking about how crap the situation is.
  • edited April 2012
If you try to give her the remote (i.e. the batteries from it) she does tell you she thinks they are the wrong ones. That she thinks you need "the big stumpy ones".

Well, maybe she is actually very smart and justs acts like that so that the men in the group trust her and feel the need to protect her. Having others taking care of you is very important after all. Carley is probably just waiting for the right moment. When everybody unerstimates her, it will be easier for her to reach her main goal... becoming queen of the survivors of this apocalyptic world!!!

She will wait for the strongest male to make an appearance and then cling to him. She will become his lady and manipulate him to do whatever she seems fit.

I mean ... the battery situation seemed awfully surreal. :P

I don't know why any female would be offended by this "puzzle" - there are plenty of stupid men out there, who struggle with similar problems.. But a woman does it, therefore it's because she is a woman? Surely it's because she's stupid, not because of her gender?

I found it more unbelievable that a shop has two random, loose batteries lying about to sell than someone not knowing how to put them in.

Also, guys, seriously, this game is based on a "zombie" apocalypse where dead people get up, walk around, eat other people, are attracted to gunfire and noise.. All because of a virus (which normally affects the living...) And you guys find it hard to believe there's stupid people who can't put batteries in properly?

It's like the whole Dumbledore argument all over again - hundreds and hundreds of fans refuse to believe the character was gay, and yet had no problem believing he was a wizard who could use magic?

Lol ... yeah, this thread is all about Dumbledore and why Bronies aren't lame and it's all about people not liking women and stuff :D .. That's why it's called the battery conspiracy!

Gee, me, I don't like "Duck" either. He's also stupid. But instead of saving him, I would like to get rid of him. He is so annoying. Carley isn't.

Relax ... it's about making fun of a stupid puzzle.

The only rationale I could come up with for Carley was the "This place stinks like rotten corpses, there's blood all over the floor. Everybody's stressed to hell since Jerry just tried to kill an innocent kid. Carley's gone bye-bye, what have you got left, Lee?" rationale.

Other than that it was just a frustrating waste of time that my gamer brain kept thinking 'this is gonna be important later, I'm sure of it. Why would they put in something so contrived if it isn't important?". I didn't even see a way to put the now working radio in inventory, so why did it even matter?

To be fair, though, just a couple of weeks ago I was changing the batteries in an emergency weather radio, put one in backwards and started cussing about how much I paid for the the dang thing and it still doesn't work. About an hour later I thought to go back and check the batteries again.

Damn. Lee would have let me die.

That last bit had me rolling. :D

Everybody has occasional brain farts. When you're in the middle of the zombie-pocolypse, I would expect them to be a lot more frequent.

The only reason I could discover for fixing the radio was so you could have the chance to respond to Carley regarding her friends at the radio station. This gives you the chance to be consoling to her or mean. I ran it both ways in subsequent plays through. The mean one was amusing.:D
  • edited May 2012
Seriously the woman said she works for a radio station but is incapable checking a regular radio if it has batteries in it.

And when I (Lee) tell her that I will get her batteries her response is= I would not know what to look for ?

Seriously ??? this is the only thing that bothered me with this entire episode you are making a character stupider than she need to be.
  • edited May 2012
I suppose journalists have techs that do everything for them. All she had to do was get the news and report it. Plus, she was a mess after seeing someone close to her get eaten.

What bugged me was the simplicity and unoriginiality of the puzzle. I guess Telltale wanted to ease us in with something simple. I get that, but at least let us use a wire hanger as an antenna or boost the signal with something.

I can forgive Carley for putting the batteries in the wrong way. I've done that when under a lot of stress, then had a good laugh when I realized it. Stress relived.
  • edited May 2012
They could add something like "She is under too much stress and is not thinking right at the moment. Just saw her news editor being eaten alive and now is shooting the head of people/zombies left and right."

It is simple. Survivors can lie.

Based on his ability to shoot with the Pistol after the zombie outbreak. It would indicate she is something else than just a news reporter or even that she is not.

Sure, they could add all kinds of different things that explain why Carley couldn't figure out the batteries, but it is more fun to try to figure it out and debate it.
  • edited May 2012
I came here to say the exact same thing. This level of stupidity did not just bother me, I found it to be a complete immersion-breaker.

There are a lot of people trying to explain this away, whether by stress or being too young, etc.. But, I don't buy it. I think it was just a poor choice on the developers part. They wanted to illustrate the differences between Carley and Doug (Carley being great with defense, but has ZERO skills otherwise. Doug being a complete wimp, but being "ingenious?"), so that when the time came to choose between the two, you would have something to base your decision on.

They could have done this without making her a total idiot. The "too young" excuse is weak for the simple fact that there ARE still plenty of items that use batteries. To pretend that she wouldn't know this because of Ipods and having tech-guys is kind of laughable. She still has remote controls in her house(that use batteries), she still has to plug things in, she still knows that electronics need power to work. To say that the battery sizes/type would confuse her is also a weak argument. Are you also saying that if she was given a piece of wood with 3 different hole sizes, and 3 different sized pegs, that she would not be able to figure out which pegs go in which holes? Exactly.

There is a lot to be said about this, but I don't want to go on forever.

The main point here is that there is obviously an issue, regardless of the reasoning. There are enough posts and responses to indicate that this was a jarringly unreal moment in the game to most of us. I like this game, I love Walking Dead. But I am not going to defend either of them just because I like them. This was just very bad writing. Please do not repeat it. We are smarter than this, and we expect anyone who could survive this long in a zombie apocalypse to be smarter as well.

As it is, I chose Doug because Carley was stupid, not because he was smart. Programming a universal remote should be something that anyone who uses a TV can do, just like putting gas in your car (I know some people REALLY don't know how to do either and I doubt they would live in a zombie apocalypse). Doug is only less of an idiot than Carley, not some kind of tech guru, give me a break. The game is being played by people who figured out how to get their Steam/XBL/PSN/TT accounts to work, and how to join forums. If you can do this, but you can't program a remote, there is something seriously wrong.

If you don't know how to program your remote, simply look for a button labelled P or Program, hold it till a light flashes or stays on, hit 001, hit ok, try to turn the power on or off. If it doesn't work, repeat all above steps but increase to 002, rinse/repeat. yay, now you can survive Zombie Apocalypse. LOL.

Comon guys, make it more intelligent... We are gamers, we solve puzzles and shoot people for a living.

    /Rant Off

I gotta say Carley not knowing it had no batteries then putting them in wrong made me suspicious too also she's a helluva shot. Makes you wonder if she USED to be a reporter just like Lee USED to be a teacher. Still Batteries think is amateur hour unless the lack of caffiene addled her brain

Everyone is going to have different skillsets in a disaster situation. If the developers could make a "mistake" like including this obvious puzzle then Carley could certainly mistakenly put the batteries in wrong in a stressful environment.

As for programming a TV, the way Doug put it, he memorized the codes. We could go 001-099 and spend a lot of precious time or we could defer to the expert. Let's pretend the TVs were all Emerson(like mine). He could enter 011,026,027,028,029,030,031,032,037,042,053,064,065,067,075,076,079 much more quickly than we could enter in all 99 digits.

That's not to suggest that his skill is limited to programming televisions nor that we would require him to program any further(but you never know right?)

I don't know about where you are but here in the UK it isn't that easy. For one thing, the codes are 4 digits, and how you enter them differs depending on tv and remote. There is no P or program button, it normally requires holding down 2 random buttons then the 4 digit code, then OK. To add to the awkwardness, we have 3 remote controls for one of our tvs. Each one requires not only a different 4 digit code, but also a different button combination before entering the code. Could I honestly claim I memoried all possible 4000+ code combinations? Hell no...

In the end I saved Doug, purely because the number of people in the group that can handle a gun (even without Carley) outnumbers the number of people that can do anything else useful. Also, Carley was only grabbed by the ankle... stamp on that guys head or club him with the butt of your pistol instead of staring at him.

I also found it depressing only 26% person of people saved him. Guess gamers like a pretty face.

I think Carley did what she did (faked being a dummy that can't put batteries in a radio) because she was trying to get Doug's attention.

If these game characters have lives of their own and not everything revolves around Lee then maybe Lee, Glen and the zombies foiled her plan.

She found the radio and ditched the batteries. Then got as close to Doug as possible and started trying to fix the radio with the hope that Doug would notice. Unfortunately, Doug is in the corner and won't stop looking outside.

Enter Lee who finds the batteries and fixes the radio despite her efforts to keep it broken.

Then Glen calls and her and Lee go on a rescue mission.

Then Carley just goes for the direct approach and tries to tell Doug she has feelings for him but the zombies put an end to the conversation.

If Lee had not been so helpful and smart and fixed the radio, I think Doug would have eventually notice Carley having trouble with an electronic device. He would have helped, they talk, yadda yadda, a romance moves forward.

I agree that should could be trying to get Doug to notice her and i think this could help prove that because after you find the picture of Lee's family. Carly comes in and tells Lee that she knows who he is (Which by the way only 2 people can figure out who Lee is. The other person being Larry)

Carley would have turn on the radio and at not listening anything think "Aaah, it's broken" and she would not check on the batteries.

In stress situations could be this. When Lee says that the radio have no batteries at first she admits that she knew that... but then says not, like saying "Stupid me".

She's not the smartest girl on town but... not so. :p

Besides she's a good shooter. Doesn't miss one bullet. Always hits. :)

There is no decent excuse for someone old enough to be an employed news reporter to have no idea that electronics need power. Sorry. None. Plenty of things still need batteries, and you're saying she managed to go the entirety of her life in the 90's and early 2000's without once having to put batteries in something? Really?
