I guess I just do not understand why people insist that it is impossible for Carley not to know how to work through her battery problem alone. Why is it impossible? Just because it is common knowledge? I have met plenty of people who have no common sense and even less common knowledge. lol. And they aren't even in the middle of a zombiepocolypse!
No, it isn't completely out of the realm of possibility that *some people* wouldn't think of batteries for a radio. But Carley is/was a radio journalist. That means she had to have SOME interest in radio, right? To think that a person with enough interest in radio to become a radio journalist, and NOT KNOW that a radio needs batteries to function, is at best absurd. At worst, really effing stupid.
Now, in reading the many 'possibilities' of the reasons (story-wise) for Carley to be so *stupid* was that she had a thing for Doug, and wanted to make a situation that HE, not Lee, would help her... That makes at least a little sense to me. But trying to make a case where an adult, professional woman, in radio journalism, didn't know to check for batteries... is just asinine.
Yeah, I find it a bit weird that there's a tech specialist who can reprogramme a remote there, right next to where she's fixing a radio, and thier stumped by the batteries. But it's the same thing with the food you find, its pretty blatent where it is, but everyones taking part in a hunger strike until you give them some attention.
Hope Carly doesnt peg it in the next episode, it would make saving her feel kind of meaningless. Rather let us get attached to whomever we saved, then make a life/death saviour decision in the final chapter.

the thing is carly may have wanted to become a reporter for a radio station because of the travel options the meeting new people and the attention, but that job has nothing to do with an actual radio device does it ? she maybe the star of the show but she wouldn't necessarily have used a radio that much out side the office where as someone else pointed out tech guys would of kept it working for her...it's easy to miss the bigger picture...
but think how many tv actors/movie stars can't work they own tv/dvd/blu ray system ? heck could they put in a scart lead /hdmi lead / aerial ? so thick they get there kids or butler or house maids to do it or pay a professional....
When the Zombie Apocalypse occurs if your not famous or known by your associates you can lie about who you are. I also noticed Carley never says she's a reporter where Doug can overhear and comment and Doug never talks about Carley other then liking her { I think]. and the one of them dies and only the two of them know what really went down in the rescue and Doug is smitten and Carley was rescued so maybe
Doug was doing something shady while Carley was being transported by cops but zombies caused an accident and crashed. Carley called for help Doug saved the day and the two of them went together meeting up with the others. then one died so the survivor is the only one who knows the truth

As I had said in an earlier post, and Milo summed it up in his own way, just because she is a radio journalist does not mean she knows anything about the workings of a radio. A radio journalist, like a television news anchor, is a personality. They are usually clueless about how something works. They look at a camera and/or talk into a microphone. Besides possibly writing news stories, that is all they do. I know it is confusing because the word radio is in their job title, but trust me on this, they typically know nothing about how one works.

PULease. You know what I meant. lol. You put your own spin in it too, but admit it, I said something about her radio techs long before you AND, I might add, mentioned actors not knowing how to run a camera. Shall I go look up the posts for you? :P lol
Edit: btw, you and Cap need something more to do than hang out on these forums posting back and forth. lol
Like theres anything better to do wabbit I'd be glad to do something constructive here but i have no idea what that would be. I'm currently working on a Webcomic Fanfiction , Promoting modest medusa season 2 kickstarter , reading and sounding board Davidsons awesome book, and i've volunteered services to Guy Gayler creator of the Bureau indie games on XBL and I still have copious amounts of free time. So if you have something constructive preferably of the writing variety i'm all ears.

I don't think Carly’s intelligence should really be judged by one isolated incident. One needs to consider her logic and reasoning throughout the rest of the game. I felt that battery puzzle sequence was the developer’s decision, not to show how stupid she was but to give the gamer a simple interactive puzzle to solve that would develop his relationship with her. Perhaps the puzzles in future episodes will be more complex. Carly didn't present as an air head anywhere else in the game, in fact when she did speak she seemed assertive and perceptive. These traits seemed more consistent with her throughout her time in the story than the one off incident where she showed a lacking of common sense. I strongly believe she will prove to be an asset to the team in episode 2 and could perhaps show leadership skills. She has already shown focus and courage particularly at the motel scene. When Glen seemed to be putting the group at risk for a "damsel in distress", like Shane she was able to rationalize and weigh up the cost calculating the risks. Irene was a stranger and not worth the sacrifice of the group. The walkers couldn't even get to her. In this case Carly probably saw more clearly because she was female where as Glen seemed more led by romanticism and was smitten by Irene even though he hadn't seen her yet as he seemed upset when he learnt she had a boyfriend.
Even if you save Doug he still doesn't fix Clementine's walkie talkie. When comparing Doug to Carly's personality I found Doug to be less considerate and at times insensitive i.e the comment he made about the trapped Walker, he had a rather him than me attitude which even caused Lee to grumble shut up Doug in annoyance. He didn't seem to bothered or get involved when Larry and Lilly wanted Lee and his group to leave their hide away. He shows little gratitude to you for saving him and he offers you a half eaten candy bar in episode 2 where as Carly actually thinks about Clementine and offers you a whole candy bar to feed her with in the preview to episode 2, assuming you saved Carly in episode 1 which is a bigger sacrifice.

True enough Episode 2 could have Helping Larry pick out the pills to take by deducing whats his heart pills and if you get it wrong he dies. Bu why couldnt he do it himself lee isn't a doctor and larrys been taking these for a while it's just a puzzle

As has been stated numerous times, by numerous people. It is highly unlikely that an adult woman in the US would have never, in her life.. childhood, teen years, young adulthood, have encountered electronic devices that used batteries. You and Wabbit are, seriously, grasping at straws to make room for this inane idea that it's not only plausible, but likely by the way you start the last paragraph of your post...
"but think how many tv actors/movie stars can't work they own tv/dvd/blu ray system?" Where are you getting your information that there seems to be a large portion of the acting community that can't operate simple home electronics? Or, is that again, just an idea you've pulled from the ether to attempt to justify your argument?
As has been surmised in the thread... it was a simple puzzle that the developers put in the game to help pass the time, and to, most likely, give a basis for the decision to let one or the other die. Techie, or Shooter.

Wow.. way to ratchet up the condescension. I'm not confused in the least. I'm a 40 year old male that has, in my life, encountered many people, in many professions. And I can honestly say that each and every one of them know 1.) a personal radio requires batteries to function, 2.) how to fit them in place, and especially 3.) they know what the heck batteries LOOK LIKE.
As I asked Milosuperspesh in my last post.. where is this plethora of information that illustrates that "they typically know nothing about how one works?"

Ok as a 30 yr old british male, i hear, read and see in the media and in my life experiences alsorts of things that included 'thick' people who don't know shit
Ever watched an idiot abroad / jerry springer/ big brother? Ever heard the term blonde bimbo? The list goes on and it ain't hard to find...
You sound like you've led a sheltered life to be saying that in your '40 years' or have you just been living in a bubble ?
I know a few numpties personally and they do make this whole battery thang believable.. an example would be when something is on fire they panic ring the fire brigade or leave the house and totally forgetting to switch off electricity.. or when there's a chip pan fire, leaving the gas/hot plate on and screaming....filling up the car at the petrol station and LEAVING the keys in the ignition then wondering why/how people could steal their car...
Heck even my own mother (i dare you to mock her) has trouble with a tv remote and isn't sure about batteries, NOT i repeat NOT because of she has something wrong with her, she HAS no interest in knowing how certain electronics work and thus a possibly old fashioned upbringing and life from the1940's she leaves the modern techology to me and my dad...of course she can work everything in the kitchen and because that is what she needs to know.. and does know what a battery looks like but like carly 'doesn't know what to look for' but she could tell what wouldn't fit in and what is not suitable..
so to summarise if someone has no interest in things they won't go out their way to find out.
Back to carly, as i'm sure i have said already she had other people to do the work for her and hence the theory about doug or lee being her 'guys' to 'fix' the radio..
So your point has been shot to shit...if not let me reload for round 2..

All the stupidity is plausable so all mine and wabb's counter arguments is just the other side of a coin.

you want more example of stupidity ?
Specific examples that you can back up with information is what i believe they are requesting Sir Milo
Well the only explanation is that she cant think like she normally would because it is after all an apocalypse. But still, i think an educated person, especially a journalist should know to check for batteries.
But that's exactly my point. You mother, sweet as she is with the whole remote business... was her profession in a business where it would make sense that she had at least a fundamental knowledge of electronics? If your answer is "no" then your response is moot.
I know there are idiots out there. I've worked in computer/internet webpage design tech support, and am fully aware of the "ID10T" codes we received on a regular basis. However, those people we're people that didn't use computers regularly or, at the time, had a great deal of experience with the internet and webpage design.
So, aside from anecdotal "my mother" examples.. Where are your "many tv actors/movie stars can't work they own tv/dvd/blu ray system"?

I'd also like to state that no, I have not led a sheltered life, nor lived in a bubble. But, I don't watch "trash tv" like Jerry Springer, or Big Brother. And as I posted earlier.. all of the adults I have had the pleasure to work with have basic understanding of electronics. Maybe you surround yourself with people that are less than bright when it comes to radios and battery usage?
anyhoo i may have been misled by seeing actors and the like acting stupid and dumb and in some cases thinking there must be people like that in the real world for the writers to put it in ? but i did say but think how many i did not state i knew any i merely mean't they will exist...some may know how, but they have so much money they don't bother to think for themselves and just pay someone else to do it ?
The idiot abroad was a mockumentry with a (supposedly) real life idiot who followed in the very real micheal palins foot steps. The idiot's wife supposedly rang up and had to ask why the dvd player wasn't working, didn't know to check the batteries or the scart leads..
Then we have some out takes of interviews where they forgot to switch the mic on or forgot the were wearing it and get caught by the wires and fall over..
As for the real world examples nothing concrete but when you think of all the audio visual companies that people will pay to set stuff up / fix ?
(i think my fustration at some stuff got the better of me tonight my sincere apologies to you galan and others who think the same )
i guess my point is kinda moot now but what i was trying to say seemed right at the time you know?
as a few mates of mine say i do attract the numpties lol perhaps i was hitler in a past life ?

Fair enough Milo... I'm sure I've done the same.. on occasion. :P
now which clem camp are you with? queen or damn pesky kids i hate them ?
So far I like Clem.. she seems a good character. I like that she has a bit of a dark side (or at least I see that in her.) She knows Lee isn't what adults would call a 'good guy.' And if you played the scene out in the office, she knows he's a "murderer" and doesn't seem to mind a whole lot. Now Duck.. hmmm.. I don't know that I'd outright kill him off.. but I'd definitely have no qualms choosing someone else over him, ala Doug and Carley. (Unless it was Larry.. he can just die as far as I'm concerned... lol)
Well, this topic has certainly been talked to death, but what the hey....
I think this was adequately explained on the first page of this thread. Some folks, this poster for one, can sometimes react to terrific shock (such as the death or terminal illness of a loved one, witnessing or being in a horrible accident, or perhaps even a good old zombie apocalypse) by going emotionally and mentally numb. They often seem to be reacting just fine on the outside, but they're shut down on the inside. They're not really thinking or feeling.
People in this state will often "zone out" while trying to do the simplest tasks, and have no idea that they are indeed "zoned out." To their own perceptions, little or no time has passed and they are actively doing whatever they thought they had started to do -- such as maybe cooking (while the pancakes burn in front of them), or driving (while just sitting at that stop light that has turned green), or even getting a simple radio to work (while actually just holding it and staring, or putting the batteries in wrong).
Interestingly, and I have no idea if the writers meant it or not, but I got this vibe from the Carly character before the battery incident. She seemed oddly calm and composed for the situation, while almost everyone else was written as strongly emoting stress and fear. When Lee asked her about the radio and I turned it over and saw no batteries, my first thought was, "Oh yeah, she's turned her brain right off. We're really going to have to look out for her until she comes out of it and starts to deal."
My second thought was that all the leet doods on the internet were gonna have a field day. Everybody knows that fans love to pick out somebody to hate in any genre show, and this woman is apparently too stupid to know how batteries work.
I try to never underestimate the stupidity of others, but Carly is clearly supposed to be an intelligent person, all of her conversations with Lee showed she had a good head on her shoulders, except the one about the radio. Had Carly been a younger girl, who knew only of iPods and smartphones, sure. But not a woman at her level of professionalism and age. She couldn't be a reporter without at least an advanced degree in broadcasting or communication. Also, people comparing her to a Hollywood type seems like a stretch, she's a local reporter, not Barbara Walters. She would not be so pampered.
It was a poorly designed, way too simple puzzle, and it didn't fit in with the atmosphere. Though definitely worth doing if you haven't, the radio broadcast is pretty chilling.
Still, some clever excuses coming up from you guys. "Maybe due to the stress of the apocalypse, she just had a sudden aneurysm, which totally caused her to forget what batteries are and how they work!". Priceless, really. Those Telltale writers must love you guys and your massive leaps of faith.
My sincerest apologies, Galan. That was not my intention.
I only wished to point out that ignorant people do exist and a career in the radio field does not automatically dictate knowledge of everything radio. It seems to me many assume because Carley is in the radio business, she should know about the radio. That is an assumption and in this case wrong (indicated by her lack of it during play) Yes, I understand we are speaking of just batteries here. Most people do know about them, but lack of such knowledge is still possible. Just because you have yet to meet one, does not mean they do not exist. I have met my fair share of ignorant people during my 46 years on this earth (See? I'm older than you ) and some of them were shockingly ignorant about some very common things.
Edit: Would just like to add, I have spent time in and know people in the radio and television business, and as I stated before, a reporter is a personality. Most (especially ones located in big cities like Atlanta, GA which is where Carley's station is) do not touch or know about the workings of equipment beyond the switch on the microphone. Like a TV reporter you see on the news. They stand in front of the camera and talk into the microphone. There are other people behind the scenes that mess with all the equipment. Normally known as the "tech guys".
In her defense, being a radio reporter means she writes news stories and talks into a microphone. She has tech guys that deal with all the techy stuff. She doesn't have to know how to work a battery operated radio.
Im surprised she made it past Her 5th birthday lol if you can't replace batteries...I mean it's got to be game over for you, she probably has to think to breathe

anyhoo i may have been misled by seeing actors and the like acting stupid and dumb and in some cases thinking there must be people like that in the real world for the writers to put it in ? but i did say but think how many i did not state i knew any i merely mean't they will exist...some may know how, but they have so much money they don't bother to think for themselves and just pay someone else to do it ?
Peace
peace be with you
now which clem camp are you with? queen or damn pesky kids i hate them ?
So far I like Clem.. she seems a good character. I like that she has a bit of a dark side (or at least I see that in her.) She knows Lee isn't what adults would call a 'good guy.' And if you played the scene out in the office, she knows he's a "murderer" and doesn't seem to mind a whole lot. Now Duck.. hmmm.. I don't know that I'd outright kill him off.. but I'd definitely have no qualms choosing someone else over him, ala Doug and Carley. (Unless it was Larry.. he can just die as far as I'm concerned... lol)
And then I went and rescued Doug.
I haven't even started mass effect 3 or finished mass effect 2...
but i'm working slowly on it darn space hamster keeps escaping
Well, if they love us so much, why are they late?
Im surprised she made it past Her 5th birthday lol if you can't replace batteries...I mean it's got to be game over for you, she probably has to think to breathe
What colour would you like sir? Shame, disappointment or rage?
I always shut off the game at the part where Shep and Anderson are talking and call that the end.
