A surprise it really isn't. The industry has been working towards this for quite some time (and with 'retail Steam games', this travesty already is reality for PC gamers and has been for more than half a decade). It still is absurd though.

Console manufacturers especially should understand that a customer who regards those physical discs he buys as his property (or as 'the game'), will treat the product with the according respect and attributes an according worth to it. That is Microsoft's actual capital, the customer's pride of possession, why don't they understand that? This is all born out of pure greed, and I really hope this console bombs in an incredibly epic way.

Reviews in Europe are rather to very negative, but some of them would still reckon with some kind of success for the XBO in the States because of all that Football nonsense. How do the US guys here estimate the situation and those sports features?

More info on how used games will work has emerged.

There were rumblings that you could trade them in to Microsoft direct and get credit or something, but according to a report from MCV, it'll work like this:
So that's small-time stores out (and yes, I know quite a few).

Effing pawn shops aren't going to do this got dangit.

Okay, I missed the exclusive NFL deal. That would sell the people thinking of the whole cable box thing. I don't think it will carry the console though.

Microsoft is announcing that there is a ton of misinformation out there about used game trading, and you should consider none of it truthful at this point, but won't go into details on how exactly it will work. Other than, you know, it won't work like you give your used game to someone and no one else profits.

Little surprised no-one's talking about the XBox One, which was officially announced today.

    And has a stupid name.

Really, there's a lot we could say about this console, but I'll just bullet-point the best bits.

    - It's called the XBox One. Even though it's actually the third. *sigh*
    - The controller is extremely similar to the 360s, with a better D-Pad and higher Home button.
    - It comes with an updated Kinect... that the console WILL NOT FUCTION WITHOUT.
    - It won't be backwards compatible. With anything. 360 games, XBLA games, nothing. *facepalm*
    - Playing a used game? You'll be charged a fee to do so.

In short - fail. The used games thing is perhaps the biggest kick in the teeth, and it's going to ruin this console.

EDIT: Oh, you're all talking about it in the "Whatever's On Your Mind" thread. Well, whatever.

I agree with everything you said except the name. The name actually makes perfect sense for what they're trying to do. It's just going over peoples head.

They're calling it the Xbox One because of how they're trying to sell it as an all in ONE system. However, I don't really think it's all in one if there's no backwards compatible. So yes, it is a fail. So wait... yeah. I take that back. I agree with everything you said.

THEY flat out said it would be full price to play a used game. I think that's the part people really care about.

See if you can find such a statement directly from Microsoft and not via any third party.

Hm. I cannot. I was pretty sure it was them who said it. I guess I was mistaken.

What bothers me is that this is such a big issue and neither Microsoft nor Sony are saying anything about it. It's like they have a plan for both and are just waiting for each other to make the first move. Fuck E3. Not everything has to have a damn big reveal.

I could go on, but as it stands right now, I have very little interest in the eighth gen consoles. Nothing is really wowing me from any party. I know neither are done announcing yet, but so far it looks like I'm completely going PC.

    That was it.

What it sounds like now, that I reread it...

If you give someone the disc, they will have to pay for a new game, full price. However, if you trade it online and have it wiped from your drive, it will just be a fee or a percentage or whatever they decide. It appears they are going to try to keep used game trading all in their market, where they can keep an eye on them. Essentially, it would be impossible to copy a game. They would have every game account on file.

Basically, the system appeases GameStop while destroying small scale shops' ability to trade(tightening the GameStop trade monopoly) and person-to-person trading and selling(either in person or on sites like eBay). Depending on implementation it may also kill Blockbuster or GameFly-style renting.
  • edited May 2013
Blockbuster is already dead here. The internet killed them.
  • edited May 2013
I honestly should have gone with something that isn't teetering on the edge of collapse, like Redbox.
  • edited May 2013
Renting would have to be done differently with this new system I would think. Pay full price for the download, then get a portion back once Microsoft deletes the file? Maybe the file from Microsoft will have a time lapse til it locks? Or maybe renting will be completely dead.

In Microsoft's America, TV watches YOU!

The Kinect will watch you as you watch TV, and "reward" you with Achievements for(for example) actually being in the room, or holding up an advertised product during said advertisement. Be a good little consumer monkey and we'll pat you on the head! This patent effectively gamifies the watching of advertisements. This is...this is pretty bad.

Actual patent. The article neglected to link to it, so I had to find it myself.

I've been hearing about TVs that watch you and advertise based on what it sees, but this is the first implementation of it. The future is both interesting and frightening.

i hope the xbox live auctions are moderated..

cos how many people will try and charge way more for a game than it's sold in shops for...this may be retreading stuff but does the 'seller' of a game license get the money back or in msp... and is it microsoft takes a cut from the sale ? now does that also mean we'd have to ship the disc to the buyer ? or do we keep the disc but loose the 'access' ? which if we keep the disc we could then trade it in ?

Yeah, except remember, this is still Microsoft. They don't package anything that's both powerful and efficient. I'm not really too worried they're going to take over anything. It's that increasingly evil Apple we have to keep an eye on.

They've even updated that article with one "clarification" already. I think they're seeing the backlash from the policy and are trying to figure out what to do about it. They're wanting some level of deniability. We'll have to see how it really turns out.

In Corporate America, it's often a good idea to get patents on things you have no plans to do, just to keep someone else from patenting the same thing. That's called defensive patenting. I think they just wanted to keep someone else from having the same idea. The "reward people for watching commercials" concept hasn't worked out so well in the past.

All this being said, I don't plan to buy one myself, regardless.

Not really, they haven't. The "Clarification" only says that you can play your games on someone else's machine if you're signed into your account. They chose their example wrong(going to another friend's house to play a game), but otherwise what they said was accurate. Playing with YOUR ACCOUNT on ANOTHER XBOX is fine, them playing after you are no longer signed in is not.

Retail games now work EXACTLY the same way download games work on the 360. The "Clarification" wasn't backpedaling, it was just more very literal wording("not always online, but requires an internet connection") bullshit meant to obfuscate the actual facts.

...Unless you are a Xbox fanboy who is too stupid and full of himself or herself that they act proud to own it and think all other consoles are crap even though Microsoft is a rip off with Xbox live (In my opinion) and all this other bs with the Xbox one.

At this point, all Apple has to do is sit back and give Microsoft mild encouragement.

It's really too bad. Microsoft seemed to be doing so well with Windows 7 and then this happens. Seriously, the one thing they've done absolutely right was the Surface, which actually makes good use of Windows 8, runs actual computer programs in tablet form, and has one of the best stylus inputs available. So, so much more useful than an iPad, but the way the company's going they'll probably make you rent them in a few months.

You're thinking of the Surface Pro. The Surface is far, far less useful. Microsoft has no idea how to do brand management and attaches the same name to two devices, one of which is completely incapable of running normal software.

so unless the PS4 is goddamn amazing i won't bother with the expense of consoles this generation, i bought the xbox 360 because at the time it had better games and was cheaper than the PS3, but what is the point, i only got a few exclusives and they were mostly bought second hand and buying a second hand version of battlefield bad company 2 only to find i had to pay for the "VIP access" making the game cost the same as a new copy pissed me off.

the xbox one (not the original, the one called xbox one) is clearly not for me, i never thought the kinect was any good and now you have to have one and it is always on, this whole media center thing is bullshit, we have had PC's for years for that, i guess if you can only afford one piece of electrical equipment a console may have a use, but then those people obviously want cheap second hand games so PS4/wii-u it is, there must be a market that isn't totally put off by the no trade in/bad deal trade in but i am sure it isn't big enough to beat the PS4 (unless they do it also), so the whole physical disc being tied into and only playable on your account is XBOX ONE's big mistake that has possibly set them on the path of a losing battle that (if they manage to weather the storm) they won't have a chance of winning until the next console generation.

They are six years older than they were when they bought their last console, and possibly even wiser. If the 14 year olds still want that thing that's meant for 45 year old football fan couch potatoes, they can go ahead for all I care.

i have a kinect used for a month suddenly i couldn't be bothered with it anymore then there's the fuss to set it up now i use a pc monitor/hd panel which has a slim bezel/frame so nothing will balance on top of it with out a clip or holder so i kinda hope the third party peeps make one sharpish for it..EDIT on closer look through some pic's of kinect 2.0 it may not need one, the micro phone sensor bar thing sort of comes down from the front (maybe adjustable?) and a tab on the back below the cooling fan (woohoo more fans to make noise and suck in dust...) seems pretty big so maybe it'll balance ?

unless by the time i am persuaded to buy in to this xb1 i'll have rejigged my rooms layout and gotten a bigger screen and moved down stairs lol other wise no jumping around like a loon for me as it disturbs people down stairs..as right now i sit in the corner of my room next to my pc and the middle has my 'normal old as fk crt /tube tv' on a stand/shelf thing which has the xbox /freeview and hifi on it.

looking at the rear of the xb1 the cable set top box MUST HAVE a hdmi connection to then plug in to the back of xb1 i'd say most of them do now but some of the older models will require an upgrade.. yay MOAW expense for some ! (i don't have satelite or cable and my freeview is scart only woohoo 99 quid cheap dvr) so that'll mean the new tv will need to have hdmi out if thats possible other wise thats another feature i don't use.

xb1 xboxone sounds a bit like a space ship name / or like in transformers nbe 1 aka megatron

houston we have a problem....er we didn't make the xbox one call microsoft...or optimus prime...

Ah Futurama references. Its like Simpsons but is far funnier when seeing Bender do it and seeing Fry's reaction. The reference perfectly describes how most people should feel about the Xbox One.

EA sports snowballs chance in hell..only got tiger woods 12 and that was a mistake...learned my lesson..lol stupid friend recommended it...and he disapeared once he left his wife n kids and shacked up with a new lass..

and the new ip's may sucker me in...

and if epic get their act together to make another gears of war after the borderline fail that is judgment..

saints row / gta...haven't played just cause

    a crackdown 3 ? hmmm maybe / big if

and no more than 500 british pounds lol the ol credit card may feel a slight pinch on that amount..

I know there's a thread on Xbox One, but this deserves its own thread. Rare announced that they are bringing back an IP. It isn't going to be a new Banjo or Conker game. Judging by the picture, it shows a knight. So it might be a new game of Wizards and Warriors.

    Your thoughts?

you could build or get built a good PC for £500 especially if you already have a good monitor etc. and you could just upgrade one or two things for cheaper
